Righty ho, as we've got roundabouts sussed, how about these four? Four pictures, find the link between them, which of the four is the odd one out and what would be the fifth in the set. Station A: (click for a larger version) Station B: (click for a larger version) Station C: (click for a larger version) Station D: (click for a larger version) Oh and there's a veritable splattering of backgrounds available for [glow=Teal,2,300] [/glow]

C looks horribly familiar. Is it Hammersmith (MDR/GNPBR)?

Inset A - East Village although probably taken during it's time as the Olympic & Paralympic Village.

I think that I should retract Hammersmith as station C. It still looks familiar though.

If the link is that they are gates, the odd one out could be Southgate as all the others are gates to the City of London.
Other stations with Gate in their name include Highgate, Notting hill Gate, New Cross Gate, Tower Gateway and Aldgate East, but which one would comlete the set I'm not sure. A Turnpike (as in Lane) is a sort of gate too

I think you've got most of today, so lets go through it. Right off the bat mtmikethom gets the points for A: A- Maybe Southgate? B- Pin has dropped on Moorgate? Southgate - escalators [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Points for inset A go to Bigbaddom Inset on A is Olympic Village? Inset: Olympic Village from Olympic Park [Chris M] (click for a larger version) mtmikethom adds the points for B to his tally B- Pin has dropped on Moorgate? Station B: Moorgate - Bench on platform 9 [Chris M] [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Nobody attempted background B, so here is the unmodified version: (click for a larger version) Progressingnicely scores with station C Station C: Aldgate - ticket hall [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Astock5000 has correctly identified inset C C Inset = Class 170 on the Forth Bridge. D = Chesham. Inset: Forth Bridge - southern approach viaduct from north [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Station D was thought to be Chesham by several of you, but allan60 wasn't fooled Station D: Barbican - roundel frame on old eastbound NR platform [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Progressingnicely rounds out the set of images by correctly identifying background D background D looks like the view of the museum from on top of the castle in York Background: Eye of York and York Castle Musuem from Clifford's Tower, York [Chris M] (click for a larger version) Progessingnicely also spotted the link, odd one out and fifth in the set, although he didn't quite get the reason Barbican was chosen correct. is the link that they all gates with Barbican the odd one out as its a fortified gate but does not have the word gate in the name? A - Southgate B - Moorgate C - Aldgate D - Barbican fifth in the set Highgate? He didn't quite get the reason why Barbican was chosen correct, although what he says is true, that honour goes to castlebar Barbican It was once called Aldersgate Norbitonflyer notes that there are other stations with "gate" in the name that could have completed the set: Other stations with Gate in their name include Highgate, Notting hill Gate, New Cross Gate, Tower Gateway and Aldgate East, but which one would comlete the set I'm not sure. A Turnpike (as in Lane) is a sort of gate too Highgate is the only one that fits, but nobody has stated why. A turnpike isn't a gate though, it is a private toll road which has gates (called toll gates).

"Points to castlebar for the Odd one out: Barbican used to be called Aldersgate."
Great!! > > Points win prizes. Can I have a new car?? (Please?)
I need one because of the "Planners" who, over the years, have obviously secretly conspired to bu66er up my life.
How?
1) Because of their concrete obstruction to provide a pax usable railchord from Uxbridge to Greenford although of course there is now one only used for their own convenience
2) Because of SWT's obstinacy preventing proper passenger use of the existing Fulwell railchord allowing a proper train service from Hampton to St Margarets, Richmond and Putney
3) Because of Southern's refusal to co-operate in building a new 400metre railchord on the south coast at Wick, twixt Arundel & Angmering stations, although it was part of their bid submission when they got the franchise from Connex, and which they have now reneged on
If unsuccessful with my points tally to date, you understand why a car is a necessity as opposed to attempting to use rail for what these simple journeys ought to be.

Highgate is the only one that fits, but nobody has stated why. I chose it because it was a single word station name whereas the others that had gate were multiple word names.

Exactly, there are only four stations with single word names ending in -gate. Barbican previously fitted that pattern, but I've not looked to see whether there was five at any point.

A turnpike isn't a gate though, it is a private toll road which has gates (called toll gates). the original meaning of "turnpike" according to the Shorter Oxford Dictionary was a toll gate cf "turnstile". A thoroughfare which had toll gates road was a "turnpiked road". It seems to be an Americanism to refer to toll roads as turnpikes, but then they seem to have an aversion to the word "road" - which is why every so often they get sold tickets to the end of the Northern Line when they actually wanted to go to the station between Paddington and Marylebone
