At Old Street, both N/B and S/B it appears they have changed the bulbs or something, the lighting is now a ghastly blue/teal colour that is enough to give you a headache and gives the platform a nasty atmosphere, anyone know whats going on? I remember something similar was tried at Belsize Park a few years ago but this is even worse!

Going by your description, I suspect that the new lighting is LED in accordance to energy saving measures. The Circle & Hammersmith platforms at Baker Street have also received this treatment.

So it seems you don't like LEDs. Too bad I never visited stations with that yet.

Sounds a little too blue to be LED, in Japan there is a station where they are trialling blue lighting as an anti suicide measure

Alight - its a similar colour but the blue is more extreme than that, perhaps compounded slightly by the fact the tiling is the grey/blue Victoria line style. The lighting at GPS doesen't look too bad, Old Street's is more depressing.

Checked tonight. They are whiter than normal LU standards. They are low energy and have diffusers.

I expect they have fitted the horrible cold/blue 7000K LEDs like on some buses, instead of warm 3000K LEDS. Charing Cross hospital has retrofitted LED tubes to their existing ceiling light fittings and the they give a normal warm colour light.

I was on a bus recently that certainly had that kind of lighting. It wasn't very "nice". It was something I could sit down in and read my paper in, but not something I would like to be in for a whole journey - ESPECIALLY - on the tube. If anyone is interested, Waitrose, where I work, is fitting these new LED lights to all of our lightings in an upgrade plan over the next 36 months.... ( ! ) Toby

the new tubes use around half the power of the old T12s. Several options are being examined to get the best solution but expect escalators to have new (non LED) illumination soon. Longer lasting too so money saving and lower electricity bills

I fear the blesséd health & safety might have a hand in this somewhere.
"I fell over under the dull canopy because I couldn't see because the lights weren't turned on. I want ten million pounds."
btw, some of those pics could do with being a bit smaller.

As well as energy and replacement costs the LEDs will help in reducing the heat down in the stations. However the lighting will still need to be cleaned from time to time, given the tube's dusty environment. I thought from all the lamps day burning these days in the open sections, LUL were not too worried about electric bills. Lights are rarely switched off. For example, my favorite is the modern Canary Wharf station and the lights under the glass roof at the entrance which are always on. Typical examples of LUL stations burning the elecy during daylight hours.

The station lighting left on even when the sation is closed and there is nobody about, including the station signage. Lights left on trains in depots the list is end less.

Given Waitrose's attention to detail I would be surprised if they installed the cold 7000K white LEDs for shop lighting.

These are High Pressure Sodium (SON) lights and don't produce a particularly nice light. Low Pressure Sodium (SOX) isn't used on the railways as it is yellow in colour (with the red warm up phase) which can confuse drivers at night in relation to yellow signals.

most open air stations have sensors and timers but it can be difficult to keep them clean etc.
The different colour LEDs at Waitrose are for different foods - meet, cheese/dairy etc.
As I said before, not all the new lamps are LED but they still save energy.
New solutions for the open stations are being examined.

They have some especially bright lamps at Bushey, on platforms and covering the approach road at the back of the station. They were burning them 24/7 during the Olympics and when I queried it I got some BS about the Paralympics and DDA.

Went to Old Street yesterday - didn't think the lighting was that bad. Not keen at all - when I drove through there last week I wondered what had happened when the platform came in to view. If we want to save energy, why not look at how station lighting levels have been needlessly increased over the last 10 years. Anyone unconvinced of this need only take a look at Brent Cross, which when first installed quickly gained a reputation among staff for probably being visible from outer space!
