Whilst watching a few videos of A stock on YouTube the other day, I came across this Gem from citytransportinfo: It shows prototype refurbishments which look far more modern than the refurbishment they eventually settled with, However I know which one I prefer! But it led me to wonder which units recieved these interiors and why they didn't catch on - I'm assuming cost played it's part? If anyone knows or has anymore photos/videos of them, please let me know. Thanks Matt

There was not enough money to open out the ceiling bulkheads or put in continuos luggage racks so we got what we had. I think the A stock refurb was good. The first interior looked modern but would have looked dated now. The second one (6132) looked horrid!
The girlfriend just saw it and 'Star Trek' was the first thing she said!

Hmm, it does look a bit "Next Generation". What happened to the unit?

Scrapped with 5207 except 6132 which is now RAT car 2. They were converted to standard in the main refurbishment programme.

Yes......I'm very glad we got the refurb we got! I think it looked really good as well and saw out the last years of the stock very nicely. I'd go along with 6132 being horrid as well, I'm very pleased that didn't happen! ;D

I think the second one would look better if the Met Line purple wasn't used as much. Also a couple of questions: 1. Did both prototypes run in passenger service? 2. Were they painted in the standard LU livery? 3. If they did run in service, as it was only a one car section, was the rest of the train the typical unrefurbished type of carriage?

The first prototype refurb shown in the video I think looks bloody good with the full length luggage racks and ceiling things, the second one reminds me of the cheap looking rubbish interiors of Sprinters and MK3 based EMU's.
Glad the current (can I still call it that?) interior is the way it is, retaining a classic look with classic features such as the luggage racks and seats but still not looking dated.

When 5132 and 6132 were done, they did not run in service, only put on display.
When the whole unit was done, it ran in service in corporate livery. Wherever possible in the early days it was coupled to unit 5122 (the ELL painted unit in Corporate livery) as much as possible, although 5122 unit had a white roof rather than grey. The white roof soon got rather dirty and shabby.

What struck me was een in 1990 the Met still considered itself mainline and had to be different from the normal underground in even considering the B.R. style suburban interior.
In typical Met fashion, exploring strange new ideas and boldly going where no underground line went before.

At the moment, 'S' seems to stand for "Substandard"
Remember, even the Routemaster bus took a few years to get it right.
But let us hope that when its all fixed, it will be 'Sure' & 'Safe'.
Though l doubt it will have a 50th birthday
