20 years ago when training on the northern there were two different types of auto signal id plate- the standard A - eg A123- but also S - eg S456. the signals all worked the same and no one seemed to know why there was a difference. My theory is that the S signals were at one time spectacle signals whereby the lenses used to move to display the different aspect and when the signals were changed to standard autos the signal id plates were left as S for convenience. They all seemed to be located on the old cslr section ie the city branch. Does anyone know the real reason for the S plate presumably they are still in place but will go under northern line resignalling?

Looking back in the old Traffic Circulars and Traffic Notices (the teens and 1920s), automatic signals were prefixed 'S' because they were Signals. The 'A' for automatic came later. I know of no other reason. The current 'S' signals at the last count are:
S601 south of Camden Town SB City. S604 Euston City - Camden Town NB S677 to S699 - south of Clapham Common to south of Tooting Bec SB S688, S684A/B-C and S682 - north of Balham to Clapham South NB S696, S694A/B/C and S692 - north of Tooting Bec to Balham NB S704, S702A/B/C and S700 - north of Tooting Broadway - Tooting Bec S705, S707A/B/C - south of Tooting Broadway - Colliers Wood SB S712A/B/C and S710 - Colliers Wood NB homes and starter S718, S714 - South Wimbledon NB starter and advance starter
Not sure if I have missed any?

Funnily enough, I've just been scanning the notice for the Morden and Kennington extension opening. It has amendment slips stuck into it with the last one dating 1967. So my copy of the notice must have been in use for at least 40 years!!
