I boarded the train at a different carriage this evening, further towards the middle, and I noticed that the end doors had short lengths of L bracket down the edges of the door frames, and it had a wiper on the left hand window. I wondered what the history of this is.

I wondered what the history of this is. You would have been on the UNDM (Uncoupling Non Driving Motor) under the perch seat is a panel the train can be driven from when the train is split in two or to be coupled to another unit in the depot.

I've noticed the metal thing on the door edges on the 72ts single leaf doors too, and the 96ts.

Ah, that makes sense. So there would be a matching configuration in the next carriage, then. Funny how you use something for years and suddenly notice something you've not noticed before!
