During the journey on the NR main line does the S Stock have brakes and is there a control jumper running the length of the train for the rear locomotives?
If there is some sort of train length jumpers or air hoses do the class 20's have storage room for them on the return journey?
One last question. 4 class 20's, 2 barrier tankers and one 8 car, S Stock, make one hell of a length train for the Underground, how does this fit in with the signal berth lengths?

Again, the night time deliveries may be partly a result of signal overlaps and the slow speed at which the train can run at. Not an expert however.

I don't think they have their own independent brakes and is the reason why they take so long to get anywhere as they have limited speed. It's also shorter than your average freight train carrying 20-25 wagons. I did happen to be in Tamworth when one of the S8's was on delivery. I saw them at around 1630. It didn't get to London until 0130 the next morning! I got it a video of it here:

My understanding is the same as yours Metman, the protocol is that a new delivery train is not permitted within two stations of a Met train in front, i.e when one is delivered and secured at Amersham, it cannot leave there until the last train (from Chesham Mon to Sat) has departed Chorleywood.

The S Stock is unbraked when delivered. To provide sufficient brake force 4 Class 20s are used instead of 2. It is mandated that at least three braked vehicles are at front and rear of the unbraked multiple unit on the national network, hence the length.
Although it crawls through LU infrastructure, it is also recommended by RSSB that a train with an unbraked MU load ought to be able to run at a minimum operating speed of 45mph (which is quite fast for LU!)

There is an air hose running the length of the S stock train through the front M door and out the rear M door to provide air for the brakes on the brake force wagons on the back. It even seems they have developed a whole new M door with a hole in it purely to serve this purpose. Here you can see the different M door: www.flickr.com/photos/steam60163/5598524814/
