Does anyone else get any stick for having an intrest in the railways? I get lots of light hearted joking from family and friends and was wondering if I was alone. (Though I highly doubt it)

(Though I highly doubt it) No, I'm afraid you're not alone. Some of my friends know I'm a member of this forum. I get some weird looks for saying it. Ah well, at least we're all in it together.

My friends generally call me (sorry Dave for some swearing) 'fag' 'boring c*nt' 'sad I'm breaking the rules with a naughty word' and 'train orgasm'
I hate being the youngin' of this family.

At least you have set your sights on what you want to do with your life so you just take no notice of those sort of remarks. P.S You have plenty of friends here on this forum who you can contact at any time who are also (horrible expression) "railnuts". So you are NOT alone.

Thanks Bob, I know people like you on here who are really decent.
I'm kind of pleased and feel a sort of advantage that I have planned my future all ready and I can now start taking action early, which is always a good thing.
I'm glad I'm not pondering about when I leave school wondering what the heck to do.

used to get a lot of ribbing at school for being interested in railways; on way into work yesterday, I recognised one of my, well I won't say class mate, but you get the gist of it. Anyways, saw him at Euston on [DC suburban platform] and he asked me how things were and what I was doing now [despitethe fact I was in uniform. I told him, quite politely, that I hadn't forgotten the grief he gave me, all those years ago. I remninded him of the fact that a interest in something positive brings good fortune, which, for me was very true; it turns out that me fellow 'scholar', has been on the wrong arm of the law, or so he told me in rather broad terms about his "acquisitions", by rather dubious means. However, one good thing of this, little chance meet-up; he finally apologised by buying me a meal and a bottle of coke in a cafe! So, DS, don't let them grind you down.

Well first of all, greetings and salutations. Signed up to this forum yesterday, spent a good hour or so perusing some of the more recent posts, and was very intrigued with what I saw. I felt the inclination to reply to this post seeing as I regularly get the whole "Train spotter" realm of jokes etc etc. I must admit it's more the infrastructure that interests me rather than the trains themselves, but the more I read of this site the more I seem to learn about all sorts of tube stock! I for one will always defend an interest in the world of the railways, despite having never worked in the industry (although looking to in the future). I'm also fascinated by the fact that current members of LU staff post here - can't get much closer to the real thing than that. Keep the posts coming; I may not turn out to be the most vocal of members due to a lack of knowledge to most questions being asked, but rest assured I will remember the answers given!
A top site folks, keep the discussions flowing...
Toodle pip!

I may not turn out to be the most vocal of members due to a lack of knowledge to most questions being asked Welcome to the happy (growing) band. Asking questions, about any aspect of the railway, is also permitted. If no one here knows the answer to a question, it's more than likely they'll know where to find it. On a general point for anyone who's afraid of appearing a bit "daft", remember there's no such thing as a "stupid question". As someone once said, "It's better to ask a question and appear daft for five minutes than it is to keep quiet and be ignorant forever". BTW - those people who take the micky out of your interests, ask them what theirs is and what they get out of it. I'd bet most of the time it's watching football, or some other sport or television. In other words they haven't got any interest in anything. Most people with any wit soon discover that there's an awful lot to the railway. In addition to the current engineering practices there's almost the whole history of engineering, socio-economic history including organised sport (which didn't start until the railways could take the teams and their supporters to other towns to play) and other subjects.

I actually started talking about railways when it came up in discussion once and was surprised to find that at least one of my mates was trying to surpress an intrest. More people than you think will be secretly be intreseted and never admit for fear of getting the mick taken. I quite like talking to gaurds on 442's 'cos they always sit with the passengers and they're good for conversation. Never heard one of them (or passengers for that matter) praise the Desieros.

(Though I highly doubt it) Another thread I'm catching up on..... Yes, I think it fair to say that most of us here take a certain amount of stick for our 'interest' and 'enthusiasm' for the subject, but as you've already seem you're far from alone! I suppose I take more stick than many - after all, my 'identity' is now pretty much the worst kept secret around at work - but the spin off is that many staff actually look me out to ask 'off the record' questions and I get mails thanking me from colleagues for explaining things they'd never dared to ask! I even had a mail from a DMT the other day to say he's learnt more than he did on his OPT (rules and regs) training. I am known in Denmark(?) by the bloke who's the project manager for part of the D Stock refurb programme as his 'favourite train spotter' and whilst sitting with our LSM today he described me as Gricer In Chief (or something similar)! But the upshot of all that? I'm actually rather proud! So let them call you names and grow braod shoulders!
