I thought for some reason there were barriers in the Waterloo & City to DLR corridor There used to be barriers at the W&C end of this corridor. There was also a LUL ticket office here. This situation arose because the Waterloo & City was once part of British Rail and so you weren't entering the LUL system until you entered this corridor. I don't know when these barriers were moved to their current position.

A fair time after the W&C became LU. Probably when the gateline was installed at the bottom of the travolaters... Maybe around the roll out of Oyster?

That explains it then, to interchange from Central to Waterloo & City the signposted route used to be up the escalator, through the barriers and down the travelator, I have not been there for some time so did not know barriers had been installed at the bottom of the travelator.

Having passed through from the DLR platforms (Bank) to the Fish Street Hill exit (Monument) this evening, it's hard to miss the fact that this whole process is being taken a step further (if you'll pardon the pun), because of all the posters and announcements being made. With effect from tomorrow there will be absolutely no interchange between Bank and Monument, unless you do so at street level (King William Street). Until now, there was still the option to pass via the northern line platforms and into the Monument section of the complex.
Now, it's an interchange I do on a semi-regular basis; however I've not heard or seen anything advertising this until this evening. Was this change in access announced any sooner than this week? I've found a couple of press releases off the TfL website that state that the interchange will be completely removed until the spring of 2009, but no firm dates attached to it, and it's not exactly been well publicised from what I can see.

They've spent the last however many months claiming there's no interchange at all (although the mellowed a bit recently on outright lying), so in their ridiculous world they probably think they've done their job.
Although AFAIK one escalator up from the Northern Line to Monument has to stay open otherwise the Northern Line has to non-stop the station.
