Suprised! Train side are NOT striking next week looks like it Station Side! AFAIK, train staff who are RMT members are involved - however train staff also have the option of ASLEF, who are not involved in this industrial action. possible strike from 6pm sunday to wednesday 72 hour strike. I think the dispute is over staff reductions, pay etc. etc. Can anyone elighten us? The RMT website sets out their case and can be found by clicking here. LU has posted it's response on the T fL website (found here). I would say there's more to it than you see at face value, but I'd rather not go into it here to be honest.......

Management must be stopped from casualising the underground or we'll just end up in the same mess as the national rail, where blame comes before service.
They should also be stopped from the continual dumbing down of the railway - jobs which were previously down by people with years of experience, that actually require it! are now being down by people off the street from such stressful locations like Boots The Chemist and Tesco! They are also given unfair preferential treatment through extra training time, compared to their internal counterparts - irrespective of where in the business they have come from.
Unity Is Strength.

Who bets the TSSA will call off their strike at the last minute leaving the RMT out on a limb? Also is the timing of this deliberately designed to occur in the run-up to the mayoral election?
Mayor tells LU to capitulate ("Ken saves the day") Mayor tells LU to stand firm ("Ken takes on Tube strikers") RMT/TSSA strike on run up to election (pressure on Livingstone to settle dispute)
The one good thing is the 3-year LU pay deal. I bet they regret that now. Sure as anything the whole LU workforce would still be waiting for the annual rise with everything on hold until these issues are resolved. Now of course the unions have no great incentive to strike a deal anytime soon.

The majority of issues relating to this strike are well justified in my opinion, especially safety and staffing issues (including T5!). I also agree with the issue on external staff recruitment, however, only when it comes to management positions. I think T/Ops should be recruited externally as it gives other persons with railway experience* to move without having to do the same job they've had to do already (the CSA position), all over again. *By "railway experience" I mean ex/current drivers on the NR, guards, dispatchers etc, not cleaners, ticket office staff, railway "desk dwellers" for example... EDIT: And I'm sure as usual our national press boffins will throw in the word "PAY" somewhere to turn public opinion (and more importantly sell papers), of which this has nothing to do with by the way...

I can't see what the difference is. They are both trained to do the job in the same way and are both fully competent in doing it.
However, the "long term" issue the RMT at LU has is the same as HEx. The use of contract staff at one place is essentially saying they could be used anywhere else, meaning unless something is done, in all their wise glory they may well one day just do that.
