Noticed this today, however unlike leytonstone which has 3 probably because the line splits going eastbound either Epping bound or Hainaut bound. Perhaps the sidings at Loughton have something to do with it? O

Loughton has three plafforms mainly because it's always been a place where trains have terminated. The third platform is useful since it allows trains to be terminated there without delaying the through service. The middle plafform can be used to terminate trains from both directions, or can be used by through trains in both directions. It is also possible to access Loughton sidings from all three platforms.
Similar layouts can be found at Arnos Grove and Golders Green.

The other two platforms are westbound to allow trains from either of those lines to arrive at the station simultaneously.

Loughton has four platform faces and three tracks.
No.1 - westbound. Nos.2 & 3 - middle road, two platform faces. No.4 - eastbound.

So I wonder what the reason was to have a double platform. Is that to allow interchanges perhaps?

Not quite, the first Epping train in the morning leaves from Platform 1, WB, the second leaves from Platform 2, middle/WB after that everything goes from Platform 3 EB. You can go from any platform to Epping but for Hainault you have to go from Plat 3 which is why if we need to reverse one back to Hainault you have to go west over the points and back again. You can also go west off Platform 3 but I've only ever done that once and the CCTV was well dodgy.

Remember that when the Central Line was extended to Epping in September 1949, it had a very limited through service outside the peaks, and was supplemented by a two-car Loughton - Epping shuttle (which reversed either in the middle platform or the sidings), which improved the service intervals. According to the main timetable, the through services and shuttle services varied, and could each be, for example, every 48 mins, every 40 mins and every 36 minutes. There was a short period when the main service to Epping and the shuttle were each every 37½ mins - that didn't last long. Coincidentally, some notes about the Loughton - Epping shuttle will be in the August Underground News - so I am told Of course, when the Central Line reached Loughton (and before Epping), the steam service used the centre track and platforms.

To get from Loughton to Hainaut, you have to change at woodford. Therefore how would it matter which platform you leave Loughton from? The tracks only allow eastbound trains to branch off towards Hainaut. Is there a diagram somewhere on the web that shows layout. Is it something to do with points only allowing certain directions?
