How did the signalling on the original (prior to modernisation) C&SLR work? There doesn't seem to be that much information about it.

Do you mean the 'outdoor' signalling or the 'indoor' signalling?
ie - the signals themselves or how the trains were signalled on the block instruments.

You need to get a copy of The Amazing Electric Tube (Printz Holman). Chapters 4 and 6 cover the early system and changes made to it, and chapter 10 has a useful diagram (p64). Also, The City & South London Railway (T.S.Lascelles) has information (p25-6, p28-30 in the 1987 version are the key pages).

There was a semaphore signal and a signal box at the King William Street terminus. Their remains are visible in old photographs.

There was an awful lot more than that at KWS - certainly the later installation there was Evans O' Donnell (same as the Lynton and Barnstaple); Stockwell had many semaphores too - plus bits of the conductor rail worked by the lever frame to stop the engines becoming gapped on the crossover.

It was a mixture of dwarf semaphore and oil-lit mechanical colour light initially.

And the signal aspects on the semaphores were like the ones on the mainlines and the colour light ones were like the current LU signalling?

Not quite - when the CSLR opened there was no such thing as a yellow aspect: it was all red/green. There may have been yellows added when Outer Homes were put in certain places, I shall have to check through my UERL traffic notices, time permitting.
