Hi All!
Could someone tell me when the A Stock refurbishment programme began in the 1990s and which units were the first to be done? and also which two were the last to be done please?
MTIA for any info.
Best Wishes
Green Lion.

Yep, Train 56 (5018+5227) was the last full train to be refurbished (depart 6/12/97, return 29/1/98, in service 6/2/98). Train 56 was last in service unrefurbished as train 441 in the evening of 1/12/97.
Then there was half a train, unit 5024 (depart 20/12/97, return 31/1/98, in service 11/2/98). Unit 5024 was last in service on 10/11/97 with unit 5187 (which was part T55).

Indeed. T441pm nearly 15 years ago (!) was the last 'silver bullet', as announced by the T/OP on it's fast Chesham trip through Harrow! Last trip that evening left Watford at about midnight bound for Wembley Park then ety to Neasden Depot and off to refurbishment land. Happy Days!

When was 5000 refurbished?
(I think we need a separate thread for this discussion).

Part of Train 32 (5000+5108/09).
Departed 14/9/96, returned 21/12/96, in service 3/1/97.
5000 came back as a de-icing unit.

Hi all!
Thanks for all the replies. When did the refurbishment programme begin please? i.e. when did 5234/35 and 5172/73 depart for Derby?
Best Wishes
Green Lion.

I know that it was officially released to service on 30th September 1994. There was a small article of it archived on the web that I found some years ago.

As they say on Facebook, "it's complicated!" ;D ;D
5234 and 6234 Neasden to Derby by road 8/8/90. 6235 and 5234 Neasden to Derby by road 9/9/90
5172 and 6172 Neasden to Derby by road 5/8/92 6173 and 5173 Neasden to Derby by road 6/8/92
Returned as 8-car Train 1 by rail 23/4/94. Re-entered service 22/9/94.
5234, 6234, 6235 and 5235 wasn't just a refurbishment, but a reinstatement job as well, as all four cars had been out of service since 1981.

Thanks as ever for the comprehensive reply and for the explanation as to why 5234-5235 was away at Derby for years rather than weeks or months!.
Best Wishes

Many people I have spoken to have commented on seeing A Stock on the back of lorries on their way to Eastleigh and what good condition they appear to be in.
I think this shows how extensive this refurb was and who knows with a new traction package they could have got a few more years out of them.
If only.......

Given the financial difficulties that LU had at the time - and the fact the Met had small priority for getting new trains at the time, unfeasable. Still we can dream...

does anyone know if the motors were quietened as soon as the stock was refurbished or was it done before?

According to some books that I have, the motors were rewound with replacement wiring, and that's what gave them the more mature sound they have now.
