Any idea of what happens to the scrap A's after they are cut up?
What size pieces?
Are the bits melted down here or abroad?

Wouldn't there be asbestos worries?

I thought all asbestos was removed due to the health risks? Not so sure about the Arc Shields.

Some enterprising entrepreneurs in N E London and Essex have just been caught turning aluminium into £1 coins. Every time you handle a £1 coin, you could be re-cycling a bit of A stock!

The funny thing about counterfeiting of bank notes and coins, is it always or atleast nearly always undertaken in some back street lock up in those geographical locations you mention. The recycled A stock one pound coins would be nice, as they would be a lot lighter to carry. ;D

It's good to see proper recycling taking place for a change. Not just dumping them in some siding somewhere to rot. In this green age, wherever they end up, Coke cans, other aluminium products etc., it's a decent and worthy use for retired scrap.
Excellent pictures as always by Bengley BTW.

What was the figure in science text books at school? Takes five times as much energy to extract aluminium from its ores than to recycle it? One for Phil, perhaps? xerces: Don't think I'd want to put anything metalic in a microwave personally
