Ok this may be a silly question but why are different surface stocks given names based upon the alphabet. What does the letter denote? Come to think of this, why is the 'D' stock so called when in the 1920's there was 'F' stock, in the 30's 'Q' stock was introduced, 'R' in the late 40's & 1950's, 'A' in 1960/1, 'C' in 1969/77 etc. etc. Would it have been too logical to start from 'A', then 'B', 'C' (you get the idea.... come on I wasn't going to type out all 26 letters in order) ;D

There were probably a few gaps on the way and when the Met became part of the same organisation some of their stock was redesignated T stock. Presumably after the R stock had been built it was realised that they would run out of letters eventually and since the early lettered stock was long gone an alternative strategy for picking the letters might be a good idea hence the next surface stock built after the R stock became A(mersham) stock.

I've always understood it to be: A for Amersham (coinciding with the electrification of rickmansworth - Amersham); C for Circle; D for District.

This is quite interesting, because, AFAIK, there wasn't any 'generalisation' [if thats the right word] on tube stock before the so called Standard Stock. Some of us know Standard Stock as Pre 38 Tube Stock. Most tube stock now, is denoted by its year of construction, ie Bakerloo's is 72 Stock, Central is 92 Stock, etc. With regard to surface stock, I tend to use the same system as the tube's but add the letter before A60, or 'Cravens A60 stock', C69, or D78. Would be interesting to find out how this all started. I'll have a look through my personal library and try and come up with answers. When the surface stock gets the so called 'common fleet', I wonder what we will call it???

ROFL!!! ;D ;D ;D
Same as what I'm now beginning to call the 92 Stock; virtually every 'weld' on every cab end car is held together by sticky tape.

I've always referred to the current SSL stock as: A Stock - Ancient Stock (hence them being the oldest LUL Stock in service.) C Stock - rubbish Stock (self-explanatory. ;D) D Stock - Dusty Stock (Because of all the dust and dirt picked up on the Aluminium Body Shell. )

Consiudering what the closest relative of this new ssl stock that is currently running on british rails is, maybe "Tubestar" or "Tunnelstar". Or even "Substar"!
