For some reason the "S Stock spec" thread seems to be locked, so please forgive me for starting a new one We've all (collectively I mean) got bigger round the hips in the last 40 years or so, has the spec for the S stock - or indeed any other recent or forthcoming build - reflected this? I'm (relatively) svelte, but I have seen passengers struggling with those designs which have armrests between each seat.

While that would be rather logical, it wouldn't surprise me if they've gone in the other direction, to maximise the number of seats in a train, as with Siemens and the class 450 [1]. That said, in my experience the transverse seats on an S stock are more likely to fit 2 people comfortably than those in the narrower aisle of an A stock. Indeed, I've always known the bays in A stock to be either '1 and a bit people wide' or '2 and a bit people wide'...! The S stock longitudinal seats are wide enough for me to sit in sideways with my knee on the seat and my back up against the glass (on the seat nearest the door) with some more room, and I'm not small by any stretch of the imagination! So I would say they are definitely wide enough. If not, the transverse ones don't have any armrests between so just spread out over 2 of those

The A and C stock seating was designed at 17 1/2'' per bum which was recognised as just acceptable in the 1960s-70s. I regularly see 3 people get onto an A stock seat so it is possible but it is tight. The S stock seating is ok size wise, but there is so much more room to play with when you take out 30% of the seats ;D

I do wonder why armrests have continued to be popular, as this takes some space away. Mind you, I suppose some passengers need them for support when getting up or down...

But then of course you get fat Amersham man on his i-phone, i-pad etc, spread over 2 seats of a 3 seater. I always make a point of making them move their stuff for me squeeze in the middle.

And don't you hate it when they give YOU a dirty look, as if they own the seat!

The whole two-seat-three-seat thing has always intrigued me! I know most people comment that they rarely seat the number designed for, but surely it isn't as straightforward as that.
In most observations, it seems, they seat roughly 3-4 per row of 5, roughly 30% less than designed (and co-incidentally broadly similar to the S stock), yet if carrying lots of children, or packed enough that it seems rude to take up more than one spot) they can seat more.

I think that instead of making seats bigger for people who are obese, seats should be kept at a standard size like they are. Maybe it would make these people realise they are a obese, instead of the world having to keep up with their size changes!

Reminds me of a journey many years ago on an old BR EMU with a full width bench seat. One guy was sitting rigidly in the middle of two empty spaces and didn't move when I sat down. After five minutes with my elbow firmly stuck into his side he stood for the rest of the journey rather than move up!
