Hello all Lately I have noticed something on the S8 stock what is quite strange. At all the stations, beyond Baker Street, (Heading North) there are stopping boards telling the train operator where to stop. On all new stock they have the train name, S8 S7, 09. But Ive allways noticed that the S8 Stock, seems to stop about 5 meters short of the board I dont know why this is but its a bit strange, and wouldn't the rear doors be out of the station. This is not just 1 or 2 s stocks but all of them. However in the tunnels between Baker street and Aldgate, where the stopping boards are SS for S stock, because it will accommodate both S7s and S8s they train and board line up perfectly with each other I have found a recently added video what shows this very well..... Does anyone know why this is???

It looks like the platforms are longer than the S8s so maybe the driver can use his/her own knowledge and judgement whereas the tunnel stations only just fit the S8s, hence platfom extentions that have taken place at some tunnelled stations for the S Stock and why the driver lines up exactly. Might be wrong though

I noticed this at Harrow. The platform (4) is short so I'm not sure, unless it is 1) poor driving 2) a problem with the signal overlaps?

It may have something to do with in cab CCTV, the video posted shows the train stopping perfectly for the platform mirror. Maybe it isn't operational at all stations yet.

The stop marks are positioned so the T/Op lines up the middle with the edge of the windscreen as seen from their driving position. Since this is on a diagonal line, the distance varies depending on the lateral offset from the train. So as the OP mentions, the ones on the tunnel wall are closer to the train longitudinally when the train stops correctly than those offset on the platform, e.g. so as not to obstruct the mirror view for the old trains. Harrow 4 stopping position is to allow sighting of the signal from the stopped position. There was nowhere else to put the signal (economically anyway).

Well I know on the Jubilee line you have to be pretty much be spot on the green cheveron or otherwise the doors wont open I guess the 1995 stock is the same.

Ideally, the black line needs to be in the small viewing window on the 95ts cab.
As regards to the S8's, as long as the first set of chevrons (facing in direction of travel, of course) is in the edge of the windscreen, you'll be able to open the doors.
It was quite funny to see a fair few drivers fly past the stop board at Harrow platform 1, let alone when you see some of them go to exchange keys when picking up an S stock!

What is the box on the wall just behind the signal for? Staff protection of some sort?

That looks like the switch associated with the correct side door enable circuit.
It should be sealed but can be used, as an example, to turn the circuit off when trains are non-stopping a platform - if the train can't pick up the circuit, this should act as a reminder to the driver.....
