Should 5000 been sent to covent garden instead of easleigh?. the trend to towards modern design and manufacturing suggest that it will be a very long time before any anything deserving of recognition will appear again. with a icon of the metropolitan line disappearing, that has more seats' and is faster, designed for an hour plus journey.instead of a favored one design that fits all. the scenes at northwood that have left those watching shocked at whats happening as a timeless classic is totally discarded. www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/artblog/2007/oct/22/classicsofeverydaydesignno33

Sending 5000 to Covent Garden would have been a poor idea. It would have got stuck in the Picc tunnels shortly after Barons Court :-)
Seriously though, there's no overarching reason why the first A stock unit should be preserved - it's no more special than any of the others. And the space required to store a unit of A stock is huge. I'm sure the LTM will do their best to save something but they can't just conjure up 100 ft of space for a 4 car unit out of nowhere. If you've been to the Acton depot you'll see things are pretty crowded there.
It's time to accept that the days of the A stock are over. It has many worthy features in its design, but it is life expired and the profile of the passengers it needs to carry is very different from 50 years ago. There are many more passengers needing to use the inner London sections of the line; plus many more with disabilities or pushchairs needing step-free access. A stock was the right design for the 60's and 70's; S stock is what is needed in the 21st century.

5000 in Covent Garden would be a non starter-there is no space. Get rid of the buses at Acton and there will be room. I don't agree with you malcolmffc, the A stock does deserve its place in a museum, especially it is in working order and was the first all aluminium bodied surface fleet. Working sets are more likely to be kept at line depots such as Neasden or Ruislip. The CHTs are kept at Northfields and Hainault. It is important to ensure there is room.

Nice read that article in the Guardian, although I can't avoid saying how generalised Jonathon Glancey is, in terms of talking about how people dress these days. Severe instances of generalisation and stereotyping!

If space/access is the issue then would the Watford Junction developments create scope for the current Watford Station and approaches to be reworked to provide sidings for S stock and become an out of town base for the Museum to house 5000 and other elements of the heritage fleet? Turning the building into a museum would remove some of the security burden and allow them to keep exhibits in running order with the occasional heritage stock trip to Amersham or Chesham.

I'm sure this point has been raised before, but shouldn't the LTM just move all the buses and whatnot to another more bus related location, allowing more space at Acton for LU stock?

For those interested, as of last night, coach 5000 and 5001 were down the side of Knights Rail Works at Eastleigh easily visible next to the fence

Why is the Unit number at the front of 5000 removed or has it been covered by the photographer?

someone who has made legitimate inquiries into acquiring through channels is stonewalled or has to pay through the nose.
yet anyone who takes a chance with a screwdriver walks away the booty.
who says crime doesn't pay.another cause for shame.

Or, as happened in this case, one of the people at Eastleigh decided to retain the number for sentimental reasons and put it on the wall in the messroom. BTW if you look closely you can see that they are painted onto the body and not screwed on .
No theft involved and its surely better than it being chewed up?

And it hasn't been hacked out but cut away very neatly.

Would anyone be able to salvage a whistle? Connect it up to a domestic air compressor and there you go!

its impossible to obtain anything through negotiations',people have just been ignored or brushed off.
it would have been better to retain the whole car as it appears some have tried to do,instead its not unreasonable to assume its now a scrap pile.
some were dismissing 5000 as just another, however it cannot be denied that there was interest because of its original build.
with 38 stock still operating across the solent, these well designed trains and from recent videos still look far from broken, just neglected and now scrapped.

I do sincerely hope the plates from inside the cabs are removed before scrapping!
Whatever happened to the plates originally in the saloons like on 67ts.When I looked into 6036 (from the outside) last Autumn, it had a a silver plate with red writing displaying '6036' above the inter-car doors.
