I am assuming that in the the very early years of the Underground (1860's/1870's), the rolling stock was built to the same size as ordinary "British Rail" type rolling stock. If this was the case, and the stretch of line between Praed Street and Hammersmith was in operation by the end of 1868, why is it that Metropolitan Line A-stock cannot proceed west of Edgware Road? Surely the stretch of line was built to take full size rolling stock.

I maybe wrong but I'm sure I read an article on here somewhere saying that A60/62s are wider than a lot of national rail stock.

The section of line between Farringdon and Hammersmith Met was actually built to Broad Gauge. The first cars were very very wide therefore.
The A stock are the widest standarad gauge trains in Britain. The early rolling stock was quite narrow, mainly due to the running board. The early electric trains on the Met were 8'9'' over the body rather than the A stocks 9'8''! The A stock is longer too.
Edgware Road was also rebuilt in 1926? with a tighter layout so I would expect the A stock to be a tight fit in this area!

Thanks whistlekiller. I had no idea that A60's are wider than NR stock even thought it is probably obvious to many.

A-stock trains were (are) not permitted to run via Platforms 1 or 4 at Edgware Road as they are out of gauge on the curves. Before the "bang road" starter was installed at Baker Street P6, any A-60 that took a wrong signal at the Junction had to be detrained and run ECS to Praed Street Jn via Edgware Road Platform 3, "trip" past Praed Street Jn home signal to a point marked "A60 Stop" (or similar) just before the facing points, cut out what became the rear tripcock and then return via Edgware Road P2 to Moorgate to reverse and try again.
Much easier now I imagine!
