Don't know where this belongs, so please feel free to move/merge if felt necessary. Just to let everyone know, all the six 1985 battery locos have been scrapped in Ruislip depot during March and April, the last, L62, two days ago. All were cut up on site, rather than each being removed in one piece by the "scrappie". More LU stock with a short operating life - all withdrawn 1993/94.

Shame, but still two of them are famously known for hauling a set of Gatwick Express Mk2 Coaches around the LU system

What was the story with them? Why were they withdrawn early?

Were they the ones stored (off track?) by the Met line?

Thanks.
I get the impression that there is a bit of a tidy up going on at Ruislip. The sidings visible from the Central/Chiltern side seem to be emptier recently.

The 80s was really a poor and embarrissing time for London's public transport. Wonder why...
Was any equipment salvaged? The loco's looked from the outside to be almost entirely proprietary and can't find my old copies of appendix 11/13 at the mo.

The loco's looked from the outside to be almost entirely proprietary and can't find my old copies of appendix 11/13 at the mo. D78s were introduced at the start of the 80s, but yes it did go downhill after that until rolling stock refurbs. I can't think of much on the '85 locos that would be useful for any current LU vehicles. Motors from CO/CP stock, some switchgear usable on (scrapped) 83TS, custom MA sets, custom Master Controllers, etc. Compressors would be OK for 73TS and D78... I don't know whether anything was salvaged but it would all be in very poor condition after all this time left disused.

Shame, but still two of them are famously known for hauling a set of Gatwick Express Mk2 Coaches around the LU system There should do that again, but this time with standard battery locos pulling a rake of MK3 sleeping coaches, running around all night and early morning picking up passengers, who booked a sleeper berth, on the Circle Line during the Olympics and then making its way to Barking at around 8am. ;D

Be an interesting thing to do actually, clearing up the sleepers and depositing them in one place.. course you got cleaners down there, have to navigate around them ;D

Shame, but still two of them are famously known for hauling a set of Gatwick Express Mk2 Coaches around the LU system < nitpick > Three of them not two. The BATTERY TUBE ROVER tours on 02/10/88 had one loco at each end at any given time but there were 3 locos involved L65 L66 and L67 - L67 failed during the morning and L66 took over. All six were cut up on site at Ruislip by Econ Construction of Sidcup.
