The best thing about double doors is that for the same door speed the opening generates twice as fast and from the middle. So alighting/boarding can start fractions earlier. It all adds up.

They replaced the beautiful R and CO/CP stocks so I won't mourn their departure personally.
Information I've received from within TfL suggests a few reasons for their early replacement.
1) The order was placed long before the financal crisis. 2) Their replacement was decided upon around the same time the refurbishment was starting, but they decided it was still necessary given the appalling state of the trains in their original state. 3) Economies of scale. It's cheaper to maintain a uniform fleet of trains and they would have been chalked in for replacement by 2020-22. Rather than have to pay for the development of another new surface stock train (to conform with whatever minimum legislation standards were in place by then) easier to get new trains a bit earlier and pay lot less for one order and all the associated safety case gubbins that goes along with the introduction of new stock. 4) Another reason is that, like the 1983 stock, single doors are simply no longer suitable in the central area.
Hope that helps.

I always work on the WB platform at Victoria pm peak, and at times of disruption people often get left behind by D stock , but rarely if ever by C stock. That is the real problem with D stock, the single doors. Personally I would like to have seen them rebuilt with double doors when they could have gone on for decades longer, but no doubt cost ruled that out. I predict reliability and service will take a dramatic dip when S stock arrives, overcomplicated and unreliable. Over the years there has been a yearning to be on the cutting edge of technology on most railways in this country, when what you want especially on LU is reliable, bullet proof, well tried, some hope ! I will be retiring in the next few months so with any luck wont see S stock even on the Circle.PCM forever !!

I for one will be very pleased when the D stock goes.
It was fine until the last refurbishment but now, without (AFAIK) increasing the seating capacity, all the seat are too narrow. I'm only 6' 2" and yet they've managed to make all the longitudinal seat except the fold downs uncomfortable. Either the armrests squeeze the pelvis or the glass screens/end walls foul my shoulders to that I have to sit at an angle and get back ache. Lord alone knows what it must be like for people who are overweight and even wider!
Like so many things it would have been far better if they had left well enough alone but, as it is, I shall be very happy to see the back of that particular stock - the only type on the underground that has been uncomfortable during the many decades I've been using it.

I agree with kabsonline. The D78 trains are already old, even if they were refurbished in 2008. By 2015/2016, they will receive the S Stock. Compare the S7 and D78 Stocks together. The S7 stocks, can be converted to an ATO system, has selective door opening, air conditioning by Mitsubishi, and it has articulation (like bendy buses). The D78 needs to go, just like the A stock who is gone now; and with the C stock in the process of retiring. The entire sub-surface network only needs one stock now - the S8/S7 Stock.

The 1983 Stock which were used for the Jubilee line had the same case until the advent of the 1996 Stock.

I'm not sure what they did to the glass screens but they have reduced the width at the shoulder to ensure that sitting in those seats is uncomfortable to those with broad shoulders. I'm sure the cab seats are fine.

I'm sure the cab seats are fine. You are right about the armrests being wider and they now go go down into the seat base aswell. The glass screens at the doorways are the same as pre refurb even down to the original glass. The end car walls with the glass end car panels are completely new and may be slightly different in dimensions than before. I can't complain about the cab seat, even if I did I wouldn't get any sympathy.

I'll miss the D stock, single leaf doors 'n' all Appreciate that they do slow ingress/egress, but I do like the stock generally! Still, there's a few years left, and a whole lot of C stock to dispose of first!
