Has anyone noticed the travelling times between these two stations. Yet when you drive between them on the A12 it takes about a minute! A lot quicker. I guess the track must do some sort of big loop outwards?

Yes the line is initially on an east/west alignment, curves southwards, and then a long curve in order to take it on to the north/south alighment of the former GER line through Newbury Park. To give an idea of where the line runs, there is a vent shaft at Middleton Gardens.

when you drive between them on the A12 it takes about a minute! Subsequent to Mr Cameron's comments about petrol the other day it was more like 15 minutes as panic stricken drivers queued up for fuel just short of Newbury Park on the A12 eastbound causing severe congestion. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank them, one and all. When I was young (and 62TS were only a decade or so old) I recall the old alignment to Ilford/Seven Kings visible as the train descended into tunnel and by avidly watching the carriages ahead bending to the right (west) was able to form a fairly accurate picture in my mind of the Central Line alignment in this area. I'm also fairly sure there were some tracks still on the Ilford alignment although I could be wrong here.

There was a siding (unelectrified) south of Newbury Park until the early 90's, but I think the remainder of the track towards Seven Kings went in the 60's. Like you, I used to imagine where the train was once it went into the tunnel!

Like the metro in new York for example?

I would assume that this is the Vent Shaft on Middleton Gardens. maps.google.ie/maps?q=Middleton+Gardens,+Ilford,+United+Kingdom&hl=en&ll=51.574576,0.077376&spn=0.000013,0.010568&sll=51.572215,0.080981&sspn=0.013923,0.058622&oq=mid&hnear=Middleton+Gardens,+Ilford,+United+Kingdom&t=h&z=17&layer=c&cbll=51.572887,0.075234&panoid=T-4fVRJbedMfHrYjlUlw8w&cbp=12,30.57,,0,-3.9

We're still down there now...........

I also assume that the curves mean slower speed?

Am I correct in assuming that the Central is the most twisty turny line on the network I'd have thought the Bakerloo would win on that score....though how are degrees of twisty-turniness measured?

I was thinking about the stretch between Shepherd's Bush and White City

Well contenders would be the Central Line Shepherds Bush - White City, Liverpool Street - St Pauls, Bakerloo Line Elephant & Castle - Embankment, Charing Cross - Oxford Circus, Regents Park - Baker Street, Edgware Road - Kilburn Park and Piccadilly Line Knightsbridge - South Kensington.

Between 20 and 60 kph SB, 20 and 55 NB. I also assume that the curves mean slower speed? Not between GAH and NEP, 65kph all the way.

And Piccadilly Line Holborn-Covent Garden and South of North Ealing

When I lived in Newbury Park the Eastbound Central ran underneath the garden. The line to Ilford was filled in by spoil from the dual carriageway works of the A12. I can remember a steam coal train came into the siding most nights to supply coal to the yards around the Fairlop loop. If any coal dropped from the tender it was my job to hop over the fence and pick it up - darn good coal kept the coal fire burning for hours!

..... there is a vent shaft at Middleton Gardens. I looked on street view I take it the vent shaft is the square brick structure between two houses. It looks like a local supply transformer site is there as well. No notices on the gate.
