The main line of the Hounslow branch originally terminated at Hounslow Town in May 1883. The extension to Hounslow Barracks opened 14 months later. Then what had become the spur to Hounslow Town closed for 17 years. In March 1903 the Hounslow Town spur and station reopened, but two years later a second spur from Hounslow Town was built linking the station with Hounslow Barracks. Was there some sort of shuttle service between the two - or did "main line" trains pop into Hounslow Town from the east and then pop out again heading west to serve Hounslow Barracks. Both the original spur and the slightly odd "new" spur as well as Hounslow Town Station itself closed in May 1909, with the spur between Hounslow Town and Hounslow Barracks having lasted just four years. Finally, at the end of 1925, Hounslow Barracks became Hounslow West, and Heston & Hounslow became Hounslow Central. It seemed to have been quite a lively little branch with plenty going on during its District Line days.

Hounslow Barracks station was positioned on the Bath Road, which was, pre-Great West Road, the main road from London to the West. Also, Hounslow Heath was a major military area with the Barracks down the road and encampments on the Heath itself.
I used to believe that the reinstatement of the Hounslow Town branch was as the precursor to the DR extending toward Richmond, and linking up.

Picture hereThe original "Town" station was built on what was obviously intended to be the abutment for a bridge to cross the High Street and continue in the general direction of Twickenham, deep into LSWR territory. No doubt a few heavy hints from the LSWR about whether they would be amenable to renewing the running powers west of Ravenscourt Park, which formed a vital link in the MDR's suburban network, soon made the MDR realise that expansion in that direction was not a good idea after all! did "main line" trains pop into Hounslow Town from the east and then pop out again heading west to serve Hounslow Barracks. That is indeed what happened, taking advantage of the new-fangled electric trains' ability to be driven from both ends. Once the new station (now Hounslow East) had been built, the Town station became redundant.
