Hi everyone,
Which do you think is best, Driving a real train, or using a simulator, or a model railway? And why?

Well, I've never driven a simulator. I always felt I would make a hash of it which would be hugely embarressing.
As for driving the real thing over the models? No contest! Driving a model you don't get to wave at kids on bridges, look at the totty on the platforms, admire the airborne artistry of the Red Kite, watch the sun rise over the countryside.... Need I go on?

I've used many simulators but have never driven a train but come on the real thing must BE MASSIVELY BETTER!!!!! The problem is finding someone in the world who will let you drive one ;D

I used to play BVE a lot. It's great but there's no sense of movement.

I've never driven, nor been in the cab of the real thing, but will say that I think driving models which represent the real thing I find to be better over driving a simulation (this I have done). Plus the modeling gives one an opportunity to relive one's youth (if not childhood).

One wonders whether the relationship between scale of train being driven and enjoyment experienced is linear? XD

In my opinion driving the train is obviously better! With BVE coming in second. Model railways are good but not the same as the real thing

Driving a tube train in real life is a great experience but you Will find that kids on bridges usually have bricks or stones or spray cans, especially on the underground.

That's why I wave! If they're young enough they will grow up thinking that trains are friendly and won't drop bricks on us in the future while if they're older you can see that, by waving back, they have at least one hand free of missiles!

I thought that the majority of bridges of the tube were now caged to prevent this sort of thing.

I'm not a Train Op on LT. I'm a Driver with Freightliner. Many more bridges to be targeted from!

I was going to try and get a job there because it is closer to home but my friend, a guard on SWT said that many people who left SWT as drivers to go to Freightliner come back. Do you drive the sheds ('66s) or do you do different stock?

Beware if you join a TOC you will start as a trainee on trainees salary and be up against the hundreds of non railway people already competing for that position.

66s and 70s are my staple diet these days. I admire anyone who can drive on LT as I certainly wouldn't have the bottle for it! When we had a choice in '94 to go either passenger or freight prior to the sell-off it was no contest for me! A job just doing LT engineers trains would be as much as I would want as I have a thing about Battery Locos.
Hopefully once I get my life back in order I can finally build the model railway I've been hoping to do for years (18' X 12' loft space ready and waiting) and be able to make a true comparison but there are days when, professionally, nothing on earth could top actually driving the things. These moments are very few and far between on the modern railway but a few remain in the memory. It's telling that most of them are well over ten years ago now though... A reflection on the modern railway methinks!
