I recently won a book of eBay by ABC of "London Transport Railways" list of Underground rolling stock. In it is a picture of a unit with the caption;
"District Line train entering Farringdon on the pre-bank holiday Putney to Aldgate special service".
Can anyone answer me why they would do this? There is no date for the picture (or actually the book) apart from a message at the front of "the information in this book being up to date to July 1, 1960".

Taken from the 'R Stock Story' by Piers Connor (p.58)
"The District regularly worked trains over the Metropolitan Line to Liverpool Street and Aldgate on Saturdays and Bank Holidays until 1972. It also still works two trains in each direction on the Circle Line on Sundays"
Think that was published in 1983?
There was something else involving an extension of Edgware Road services on maybe the Sunday before Bank Holidays aswell? Can't quite remember the details, though it came up on here a (good) few years back...

There is a colour photograph of a train of Q stock approaching Farringdon from the east on the front cover of 'London Underground Rolling Stock in Colour' by John Glover. This is working a bank holiday service to Putney Bridge.

I have (several) TTNs for this working - and as Ben says we've discussed this on the forum before. Unfortunately the TT library is all boxed up as we've just moved.
I think when we discussed it on the Forum, there was something tied in with the 1982 Papal Visit.
*looks in the database-of-much-confusion*
Entry 401 in the TTN database: District 97/82 29 May Papal Visit Extension of Wimblewares to Aldgate.
Hopefully that should provide chance for someone to search; I can't as we're still netless in the new place - I'm on a flaky USB tether atm.
I expect that there might be some grr about the use of Wimblewares - well; it's my database and they were definitely not 'Putney Locals' in this circumstance!

Ah cheers guys. I have very little knowledge of the SSL (especially compared to the DD side of things), so it's made an interesting read so far.
Fact it has some great Standard Stock pictures and refers to the new 59/60 stock!

I believe the service was operated to maintain District drivers route knowledge.

I'm still surprised the service was not included on the tube maps of that era, nor in the Underground Guides of that same era.

Many of the District Line cars did have the Circle Line map in them so that aspect was covered. I guess as it wasn't a common service the main maps didn't show it. Of course when the SSL were just one colour, green, it didn't matter.

There was indeed a thread on here about 4/5 years ago. I provided a list of set workings taken from the 1971 Set working Book which is now in the possession of outimed to conincide with matches at Stamford Bridger learned friend.
The DR workings dated back to the early days and finished in 1972. they were timed to coincide with matches at Stamford Bridge as there were no through trains while the match was on!
There was some confusion one Bank holiday, when the DR was working a Saturday timetable and the Met was running a normal M-F timetable. The problem was that 2 trains numbered 71 were due in Liverpool Street bay at the same time...
DR men did work 2 inner and 2 outer rail circle trains on Sundays. Reliefs were taken at Gloucester Road. Some mischievous guards would ask for a physical needs break at Baker Street if they had an R stock; Met men weren't trained on them, so the job would stop while the guard went for a Thomas Titt. Reportedly.
