Those of us who were brought up in Muswell Hill will at some point in our lives have fantasized as to how it would have been if the Northern Line 1939 proposed extensions had all been completed. Allied to that, there has been much speculation as to the pattern of services proposed. Brian Hardy's very fine booklet The Northern Line extensions sheds some light on this and it makes very interesting reading. Of course, before any of the extensions were completed, the services were EDGWARE/GOLDERS GREEN - MORDEN via West End(Charing Cross) and via City(Bank), and HIGHGATE (now Archway) - MORDEN via West End and via City. If I interpret this correctly, the proposed service pattern would have been as follows:-
The EDGWARE/GOLDERS GREEN BRANCH would have remained unchanged.
The HIGHGATE via City trains would have been extended to Finchley Central (i.e. there were to have been no trains either peak or off-peak between High Barnet and the City (via Camden Town).
I had been under the impression that the Moorgate-Highgate trains were going to be routed to ALEXANDRA PALACE or EDGWARE/BUSHEY HEATH (via Mill Hill East), but this, apparently, was not the case. The Moorgate trains were to go either to Alexandra Palace or to High Barnet (peaks) or East Finchley (non-peak).
The BUSHEY HEATH/EDGWARE trains were to have been routed via Finchley Central, Camden Town and the West End. This would have resulted in the following off-peak service levels:-
EDGWARE/GOLDERS GREEN - WEST END (via Camden Town) 5 mins
HIGH BARNET - WEST END (via Highgate, Camden Town) 10 mins
EDGWARE - WEST END (via Mill Hill East, Highgate, Camden Town) 10 mins
EAST FINCHLEY - MOORGATE (via Finsbury Park) 10 mins
ALEXANRA PALACE - MOORGATE (via Finsbury Park) 10 mins
In other words, this was in units of 6/12 tph off-peak. This rose in the peaks to 7/14 tph, not an easy number for would-be timetablers!
Can anyone else confirm this?
