Hi all, I am barely 1 day old as a member. I joined as I travel from Cheshire to L ondon,spotting,3 or 4 times a year. I have seen most of the mainline stuff and am planning a look at the underground on 22nd March. I would like to take a good look at W.Ruislip LUL,battery locos and wagons. Can anyone advise of best way to do this. Will it be by passing trains or otherwise and can I see these elsewhere. Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

I think the best way to view them is from passing trains on the Central line, and a small view from the Uxbridge Met/Picc line just after Ruislip you get a glimpse of the Central/Met-Picc link with the trains near that side. Don't think there is any public access around the depot to peer over fences as it is private property (may not be true though)

If you have a Travelcard and plenty of time try using Chiltern trains to and from West Ruislip as well. They run at a higher level and give a bit better view over to the far side of the depot.
It's a brisk ten minuteish + walk to Ickenham (Ruislip in the other direction is marginally further) from West where you can pick up the Met/Picc for a look at the backdoor. You will have a quick view of engineering wagons and the stored off track battery locos.
As it's a Thursday and if you are there after midday you *may* be lucky and see the Class 20s and barriers parked up at West ready to go out in the evening (depending on what the schedules are for that week).
Good luck.

Many transplant battery locos, 92 stocks, and you might get a look at the RAT or something if yer lucky.

I remember taking the train from Woodford to West Ruislip, then a walk to Ickenham and back via the Metropolitan (A60/62) and Piccadilly (59TS) lines to Holborn and thence to Woodford.
The idea was to look at the depot which we were lucky to do as our 62TS was very slow past it.
I can vividly recall seeing all the different types of stock at Ruislip depot. Apart from the resident 62TS there were bits and pieces from the sub surface lines, both red and silver, battery locos and quite a lot of 38TS. We also saw the ancient Sleet loco and a couple of BR shunters.
Wonderful stuff, which I suspect will never be repeated in terms of colour and variety!
Oh, and just to show how times have changed, me and my mate made the journey by ourselves with no problems on a Saturday in 1974. We were 9 years old.

When I was 9 years old, 5 years ago, every other blummin member of staff stopped me for a minute or 10. Definitely shows how times have changed..it got me a trip into Poplar Operations Centre or whatever it is though.

Oh, and just to show how times have changed, me and my mate made the journey by ourselves with no problems on a Saturday in 1974. We were 9 years old. Was that before or after the Piccadilly ceased running beyond Rayners Lane on Saturdays? One early memory of Ruislip depot that stands out to me was seeing COP and R stock there in the 1973-75 time frame, before the siding off the Met/Picc was electrified.

Was that before or after the Piccadilly ceased running beyond Rayners Lane on Saturdays? I don't know, I was only 9!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I would say that it was probably the case that there were no Piccadilly trains beyond Rayners Lane on that occasion that I saw. I do remember the Met train taking ages to arrive although at that age everything seems to take eons doesn't it? We were disappointed not to have caught a 38TS to Holborn although as I realise now, they were only usually out in weekday rush hours by then. As it happens, I've never been on a Piccadilly Line train beyond Rayners Lane to Uxbridge. Might have to do that one day!

I believe all Saturday Piccadilly line services west of Rayners Lane were withdrawn in 1974. I think it was only Saturday mornings by then anyway.
The service beyond Rayners Lane died a slow death. It was 1959 when the midday off peak service went, and gradually the weekday evening, Sunday, Saturday afternoon and finally Saturday morning service succumbed until restored in 1998.

Can I ask another question about the depot please
Looking on google maps, the access to the depot is a long road from the Ruislip Gardens station area. It looks as though the gatehouse barrier is close to the depot end and the road may provide some sightings. Can anyone advise if this is the case and whether or not I could use it.

The Gate House is at the end of the depot road just as you have determined from google maps but the depot road is LU property, not a public road so I wouldn't recommend it.

A better bet is probably a few 'passes' on a Central Line train. BTW it's actually Ruislip depot, not West Ruislip.

It was not until the 1973-74 timeframe that I knew Ruislip Depot existed. When my family lived in Ruislip, we used the Met/Picc station of the same name or Ruislip Gardens to start our "adventures." In the autumn of '73 when we moved to Ickenham/North Hillingdon, Hillingdon was our closest Met/Picc station. Riding the rails back and forth to/from school in Ruislip Manor, I caught my first glimpse of the depot. The first time I used West Ruislip to begin a Central Line journey was November 1974(easily accessible M-F via bus 273 from Hillingdon); I got to see more of the depot on those trips. Not to drift too far off-topic, but when we moved to Ickenham my dad continued to start his daily commute to Marble Arch or Bond Street at Ruislip Gardens, even though West Ruislip was much closer(apparently, he had more room to park his "Yank Tank" @ RUG compared to WER).
