Probably been mentioned before, but is there a specific justification as to why the S stock has such an annoying and prolonged door opening sound?

Yes, those who were previously unaware the doors were opening on our other trains, are now hopefully more aware of the fact.
Whilst you may be of good hearing / sighting etc. there are those (including ipod owners of course) who are not as aware.
In any case, the chimes complete the "warning" cycle.
