Could anyone please advise when the platforms (all four of them as were) were shortened at Whitechapel? Was it anything to do with the abolition of 8car trains, or with a signal resiting perhaps?
Was it both ends that shortening took place, or just the west end? Also how did this affect the berths and platform berths?

Can't give you a date but the eastbound platforms weren't lengthened as such.
The westbound platforms were lengthened at the east end (over the ELL bridge) for the District's long train scheme. (In fact the DR experimented with 9, 10 and 11-car trains but it was the 10-car formation that stuck for most of the time).
Coincidentally the February Underground News contains four photos of Whitechapel on a "then and now" basis, showing CP stock on the extended WB platforms as they remained in 1981 and how it is now. The magazine also has a summary of 9, 10 and 11-car train operation over the years, which began in 1908 and ended in May 1925. Interestingly, the 'long' trains ran from either Barking or East Ham to Whitechapel WB and divided there.
9-cars split into separate 3 and 6 car trains. The short-lived 11-car (in 1911) split into 3 and 8 cars. The 10 car trains mostly split into 4 and 6, or sometimes 6 and 4.
There was no corresponding eastbound long train working.

The longer trains only operated westbound, so the problem on the eastbound wouldn't have existed.
Whether an 11-car could fit in either westbound platform, I'm afraid I don't know.

Thanks Reg, thats really useful info, I'll have to keep a look out for UN too. So there was never any extension of the platforms further under Thomas Street bridge than is current?
Alfie; could be wrong here but 11car trains weren't perhaps as long as you might think. The early District carriages were about 49' long instead of the ~52½' of the OPQR group(s), which would make an 11car train just under 40' shorter than a train formed of later cars. Did long train working ever involve anything past 'E' stock?
