The S stock trains have a three line destination display. The top line shows the train number, the second the destination and the third qualifies the route - ie "All Stations".
However in my lofty position overlooking the line I often see trains without the train number displayed. Is this a fault with the display, or has the train diverted from its originally scheduled service pattern and its original number is therefore no longer valid?
Or?

Can't say I've ever seen one with a destination but no number - is it simply that the top of the train is obscuring the display with the number on, as it's the top row of the 3?

First Great Western display what appear to be route numbers on their 165/166 Turbos however as they do not refer to them in announcements or timetables so they might as well be last week's National Lottery Numbers for what there worth XF

It's a fault. We often get T/Ops calling up saying they can't put any details into the TCMS as it won't accept them. Usually a visit from a train technician sorts it out, or in some cases it sorts itself out!

I'm sure sometimes there's a train number scrolls along in the side displays too... I've seen it occasionally, but not every time.

I have the numbers from the old timetable only but I believe the number range for each depot stays the same..

For reference only, here are the numbers from the old timetable: Number | Service | 400 | S8 Stock training path | 401 | S8 Stock passenger path | 410-413 | Amersham - Baker Street | 414-417 | Chesham - Baker Street | 420-435 | Uxbridge - Aldgate | 440-452 | Watford - Baker Street | 457 | Watford changeover train (Sat) | 460-463 | Rickmansworth changeover trains (weekdays) | 460-474 | Neasden Depot interpeak stablers (M-F) | 464 | Watford changeover train (Sat/Sun night) | 475-476 | Uxbridge sidings interpeak stablers | 711-712 | Rickmansworth/Amersham test train | 714-716 | Turning Trips |
However, I noted down on Saturday Chesham trains 402 and 404 - and Amersham train 405 - so the reshuffling has made these numbers all obsolete and not worth typing out

The current timetable numbers are allocated as follows: Number | Service | 401 - 406 | Aldgate - Chesham | 411 - 416 | Aldgate - Amersham | 421 - 431 | Aldgate - Uxbridge | 441 - 456 | Baker Street - Uxbridge or Watford | 457 | Watford Changeover Train | 460 & 461 | Rickmansworth Changeover Train (Weekends Only) | 461 - 477 | Neasden Depot Interpeak Stablers (Weekdays Only) | 711-712 | Rickmansworth/Amersham test train (Run As Required) | 713 | S8 Stock Path for mielage accumulation/training/test runs (Runs As Required) | 714-717 | Turning Trips (Run As Required) |
These allocations are based on what the train will be doing during the midday off peak period and on Saturdays and Sundays. Before and during the morning peak and during and after the evening peak any 400 number could be on any service.

As an additional observation, the train that left Ruislip bound for central London yesterday morning just before 8am had the train number and "All Stations" displayed on the rear destination screen, but the middle line that should have shown the destination was blank. I don't know if the front or side displays were equally uninformative!

On Tuesday I was at Harrow on the Hill at 6.30pm on an S Stock which arrived on Platform 4, with the information screen displaying all stations to Watford.
However the display on the Harrow Platform 4 said it was an Uxbridge Train and the train was on the Uxbridge Platform- Platform 4. Also there was a train on platform 3 with Watford on it... Getting confused...
We spent 5 minutes on the train in the station, before the driver bothered to inform the passengers and correct the information screen.... Plenty of confused passengers on the train and the platform not sure whether it was going to Watford or Uxbridge...

We spent 5 minutes on the train in the station, before the driver bothered to inform the passengers and correct the information screen.... ... That's a bit harsh - until it had been agreed whether he was going to Watford, Uxbridge or indeed somewhere else, any definite announcement had the potential to cause more confusion rather than make things better.

Southeastern had the same thing with numbers assigned to routes. However once BR ended the use of route numbers did. As its a core part of the software it's not something touched as it can screw up the train software if done wrong (ie make the train dead) so most TOC's left it in. Only on refurbishing them did Southeastern get the updated CIS without the number codes.
