I remember (just) in later life the 1956/59/62 tube stock family was upgraded to more modern standards. This involved re-wiring the passenger emergency alarm to current practice and the fitting of high intensity headlamps instead of the marker lights.
The alarm wiring was taken crudely along the front and rear of the cars and on the cabs terminated in a rectangular box.
My question is which units had these boxes? Did all 1962 stock have them? Not all 1956/9 stock seemed to have them? Were some 1956/9 cars relagated to the middle of trains?
Thanks

I don't know about the emergency alarm mods, but my trusty Brian hardy volume says that when cab radio was introduced in the early '80s, the inner driving cabs (D end on 4 car units, A end on 3 car) did not have it fitted as they would not run in service at the end of a train.
On the 1962 stock, which was all 4-car, most became single ended: those numbered up to about 1560 were A-enders and those above that were d-enders.
A few double-enders were kept for the shuttles - these were generally those with numbers ending with "0", up to 1690.
The de-icing units (ending in "6" up to 1646) were all made A- end, except for those ending 06/56 which were double ended.

The (safety) mods you refer to were done following the King's Cross fire and the recommendations from it. The 1956/59 Stock was done at Highgate. The 1962 Stock was done at BREL Crewe and Derby. The only exceptions were that 2½ 1962 trains on the Northern were also done at Highgate, as was 1x8 1962 from the Central.
The 'boxes' were at the 'D' ends of 'A' end units and the 'A' ends of 'D' end units, which apllied to both the Northern and Central lines, so wouldn't normally be seen at the outer end of a train - maybe only on an empty test run for example.
However, on the Central Line, there were 36 double-ended units, for shuttle work and also could substitute for an 'A' or 'D' unit. For this reason they had the 'boxes' at each DM end and were common at the ends of passenger trains.
The Central Line double-ended units were: 1400/01, 1406/07, 1410/11, 1420/21, 1430/31, 1440/41, 1450/51, 1456/57, 1460/61, 1470/71, 1480/81, 1490/91, 1500/01, 1506/07, 1510/11, 1520/21, 1530/31, 1540/41, 1550/51, 1556/57. 1560/61, 1570/71, 1576/77, 1580/81, 1590/91, 1600/01, 1606/07, 1610/11, 1620/21, 1630/31, 1640/41, 1650/51, 1660/61, 1670/71, 1680/81, 1690/91
For the record, 16 double ended units had mods done at Crewe and 20 at Derby.

It was part of a green painted pilot unit that ran into the stops at Ruislip Depot and only trailing DM could be saved. It was placed into unit 1440-2440-9441-1441 but took the place of 1440.
