Does anybody know why a (London Overground-style) DMI has been installed on the District line platform at Olympia when: 1. The service hardly ever runs now anyway, and 2. All it ever says is "welcome to Kensington Olympia"

We have one at Beaulieu Road too....only a very few people use the station during the week, and few trains stop there as it is in the middle of nowhere.
That said at KO, there will be use during exhibitions and anyway, perhaps the stopping patterns may change in the future? I recall when it was Exhbition Service Only, KO to HSK.

But even when the Olympia branch is in use, the DMI still doesn't actually do anything apart from display "Wecome to Kensington Olympia". I just can't see the point of having it at all - as it simply does not display any train service information.

I guess that it means the message can be remotely programmed.

It is probably part of the station upgrade? The Met has these everywhere. They can be programmed to display messages - w/end closures etc. but the real benefit will be when resignalling takes place (whenever that is!).
I'm assuming it is of the NR type as it is a NR station!

On the subject of DMI's, is there a reason why the ones at stations such as Bow Road, and Bromley-by-Bow, just show up what the next train is, and not how far away it is?

Yes there is - they replaced light boxes.
Basically the old light boxes only needed to show the destination of the next train and so that is all the information that is available at present.
These DMI's were provided as part of the station refurbishments, so as mentioned previously, better information will come when the signalling is upgraded (it's the signalling system that provides the information you see displayed).

Probably by the time of resignalling, the shiny new DMi's put up under station refurbishment will be obsolete with modern technology !

Although many light boxes still exist, such as at Stepney Green, which has a light box for eastbound trains, and a DMI for westbound trains. I assume these are preserved for obvious reasons.

However they seem to be falling into disrepair a little - the light box at Harrow on the Hill heading towards platform 1 wasn't working very well when I saw it last - showing that the train would not be stopping at Arrow, Inner, Thwood etc However they did repair the lightbox on one of the platforms I saw last summer, and a very good job they did of it! The best one I have seen is the Earls Court ones - looks the best of all of them!

It does now, it shows the times of the first train weekdays and sundays along with the last train (of which the time is wrong) but its a start.

Exeter Central's platform 1, which was formerly the dedicated Exmouth bay platform, never sees timetabled passenger services these days, and very rarely sees anything stabled there, as all trains terminate down the bank at Exeter St. Davids, but it recently received a brand new scrolling LED display. The only time I've seen it used is when a ballast train derailed on the bank, and they ran the Exmouth trains from the bay using the two units trapped on the Central side of the derailment. What did it display? Only a long list of cancelled trains that were actually running quite happily from the platform it allegedly serves.
