I am confused! The TfL site refers to severe delays on the District line :
Severe delays are occurring between Barking and Upminster due to a signal failure at Aldgate.
Can anyone explain please?

Delays at Aldgate would cause delays to Metropolitan and Circle line services, thereby delaying Hammersmith and City line services between in the Liverpool Street/Aldgate East area which would have a knock on effect on the District.
Delays on the Circle would also have a knock on effect on the District because they both join/split at Tower Hill - one station away from Aldgate.

My guess would be several late trains heading East, many requiring short-tripping at Barking/Dagenham thus leading to the "severe delays" (intervals) recorded.

Signal failure aside, the main reason for the whole SSR falling apart was a C stock being wrong direction moved back from the north curve to Aldgate East. For whatever reason, and I've heard a few, it took far longer than it ever should have done.
And the fact it was done at around 1630 just added to the chaos.
As it turned out though, that was just the start. The fact that six hours later Circle, H&C and Met services had returned to normal running whilst the District still had trains running over an hour late - some as late as an hour and a half - really does beg some questions.......

Mainly as the district just stopped for 30 minutes, not a single train was cancelled and the Circles were kept running which made things worse when the service resumed may or may not have had a part to play...

It started off with a points failure affecting the Eastbound at Edgware Road. I took the Met, and MetControl and another colleague (with his trainee) dealt with the C&H. The Edgware Road problem was sorted within about 10 minutes (I think it was that long or short), but then there was a points failure at Aldgate with trains stuck in the section. I wasn't listening too much to what was going on as I had to stop the Mets coming into the city, but a WDM was carried out and technical staff were on the track investigating. I believe the delay was something like 78 minutes. Once up and running, we got back to a decent level of service due to the number of trains cancelled (11 on the Met and quite a few on the C&H), stepping back got cancelled at Aldgate and my colleagues were using the T/Ops of cancelled trains to reform up the C&H service to time. I can't speak for the District, they may have had other problems after the shutdown, but at 23.00 they still had severe delays due to the Aldgate failure!!

There were no other problems on the district.
