I don't travel on the District too much and I thought the old Met. stock was bad(and getting worse) but at least being replaced. However travelling to Wimbledon today from Edgware Road I was shocked . Filthy seats, dirty paintwork(graffiti removal?)All round look of decay and lack of cleaning, painting and maintenence.Horrendous for a public transport system in a a major European city in 2012. Not sure if this has been covered before but is the stock being replaced at anytime?

Either way it'll all be replaced by S Stock within the next few years.

The D stock that I have traveled on recently has been in good condition and it you squint for a second, you might think that you were on Q Stock!

The C stock are in an awful state at the moment. Some pretty horrendous damage done by graffiti and whatnot. Someone mentioned on another thread that they are employing more people at Hammersmith depot to get them in better condition for the Olympics.
I can't remember the last time I saw a clean C stock, I don't think such a phenomena has been seen since 2002 or possibly longer!

Yes they have gone downhill since Tim O'Toole left, like most rolling stock.
In worst-case order;
A Stock C Stock 92TS (Cen) D Stock 72TS 73TS 95TS 96TS 09TS 92TS (W&C)

I went on a C stock they are in a really poor state the paintwork on some trains has totally come off so some parts of the train are just white! I hope they maintain the S stock well!

Not sure if this has been covered before but is the stock being replaced at anytime? Why replace perfectly functional and comfortable stock? It's only neglect that's made it look "old", and if they're not looking after the C-stock, then they won't look after the S-stock either; "shiny new" won't stay shiny and new for long.

Thats not strictly true; the C stock has received some criticism on here from former TOps for various handling 'quirks', and they've been overworked since the begining. Its not that they've been particuarly ignored by fitters but that they are just worn out now. Aesthetically they are (were ) a very pleasing design though! If only they'd completed the 8car project in the 70s, they'd have been serious people movers. Still think they should deliver a few of the Mets new S8s as S8-1s to augment the H&C; give a bit of relief to the C's.

It's all systems go to replace the A stock before the Olympics, so the C's will have to soldier on for a bit longer yet!

D Stock is in a good condition IMO, I don't understand why the need to be replaced so soon. Perhaps tfl could save some money...

They've probably saved money in the long run by ordering such a large batch of S stock. If they waited for a few years, it would cost them more to retender etc. So the logic is to replace the whole SSL stock in one hit. But I agree, it does seem a waste of the D stock refurb programme to have them replaced so soon. The C stock were refurbished 20 years ago and the A stock around 15 - 17 years ago, so they have had more value out of those compared to the D stock, which will be between 7 and 10 years when replaced.

Less money was deliberately spent on the D Stock refurb than originally planned. Interiors akin to unit 7008 and a full cab refit were ditched in favour of a less glamorous finish.

From the Upminster depot open day I learnt that sod all was done mechanically and that it was all cosmetic. There was obviously no need to refurb the mechanical stuff as the stock is being withdrawn prematurely

Was it known at the time of the D Stock refurbishment that they'd be replaced in relatively short order by S Stock then, or was the refurbishment just cut back due to budget pressures?

It was done in the full knowledge that S stock will replace D stock from around 2014.

The refurb project was started much earlier than when unit 7008 was sent as a prototype in March 1999. At that time 2014 was a long way off! Production refurbs started in March 2003, with the first trains re-entering service in 2005. With budget restrictions the project was slowed and ultimately cut back, the impending replacement by S Stock being immovable.

The C Stock are now very grotty, imo, and have a dreadful ride-quality. To be frank, I really think these should have been replaced before the A Stock - as they're by far in a worse state.
I actually prefered the C Stock before their refurb - which hasn't aged very well, imo.

There we plans to put them on the harrogate line. If anything came of it I have no idea!
LU will be using some of the double ended D Stock's too.

I mentioned this a while and got a reply to the effect that they were stabled away from depots a lot more than D stock. Bear in mind that refurbishment took place in the early 1990's, they have sustained 18 years or so worth of graffiti attacks and chemical washes with no full exterior re-paints (bar the promotional yellow pages and the back the bid cars) The results are inevitable.

I believe it to be an SSR RAT yes, the 4 car A Stock RAT will then be split so the museum can have it and it can be modded to have SSR signalling installed and run around on the met.
This is only what I have been told a while ago by various people, and plans often change, with or without me knowing!

The latest infor on the stock ownership list linked to from this forum says this as well regarding the A stock RAT to be replaced by D stock once that's replaced... The other reason to keep the C for the Olympics is that they are food people movers that will be needed more then the As I suppose. As for the Wimbledon branch when it's busy the Cs can offer a little more personal space in xchange for an often jerkyer ride...
