Today I got on a Loughton train at Holborn, and at Stratford the destination was changed to Woodford via Hainault, so I stayed on to Leytonstone to change there (I think I was at Leytonstone at about 4.45pm).
Most people on the train also changed here to get an Epping train, meaning there was a large crowd on the platform. An announcement was then made that the next Epping train would leave from platform 2 (usually a westbound platform). While the annoucement was being made, the Epping train was entering the platform, so most people in the crowd was running to get the train. I thankfully made it, but some people didn't. It would have been good for the driver to wait an extra 30 seconds so that all the inconvienienced passengers could get on. I presume the remaining passengers had to go back to the original platform.
Does anyone know why this happend?

Coinkydink city, I was on the TOp of the train going to Epping off Plat. 2.
I had no idea there were any more passengers coming, the first I knew there was something odd going on was when I was sent over at the points west of the station. I had a quick chat with the TOp on the train that you'd got off who said that the train behind me was defective and there was going to be a change over.
By this time Wood Lane had cleared the signal, the countdown was long gone, I made a PA and no one looked to be in any rush to get on board so I closed up. As far as I knew anyone left was waiting to go West.
Had I waited any longer I'd have delayed the defective train getting in, which would have further delayed the train you'd got off leaving, delaying the train behind that and the train behind that and the train behind that and the train behind that and...you get the idea.
And all this right before the evening peak, not a good time to cause delays.

Presumably you didn't see the passengers as they hadn't reached the platform yet. I ran to get the train, and just made it, and there were quite a few people who were just walking fast who presumably didn't make it. Maybe it would have been better for the station announcer not to annouce the Epping train, and just let them wait for the next Epping train (I think there was a 7 min wait for the next one), rather than cause passengers to panic.

I used to run for trains but 9 times out of 10 there's another one along very shortly. Seven minutes may seem a long time on the Underground but it isn't really. Imagine the joy of a seven minute service on NR

Did I miss my train? DID I MISS MY TRAIN? No, I just chased it out of the station because I didn't like the look of it!
I occassionally run for trains and/or busses, but I never run for the Tube; unless it means a brief speed-mince might save running for a train later.

I've seen events at Leytonstone over the years that really ARE chaos! I remember passengers being sent from platform 3 to platform 2, then back again. I've seen a train in platform 3 have its destination changed 3 times in as many minutes!
Often the driver doesn't see the bigger picture, and there is no reason why he / she should unless told.
Managing delays is also difficult, but it is an art, and some controllers do seem better at it than others.

In defence of the staff at Leytonstone in all probability they were only informed at the last minute (from my experience of working stations a long, long time ago). I wasn’t told anything at all; I got my info hanging out of my cab door shouting across to the TOp on Plat 3.
Wood Lane have very little concept of customer service; all they see is how crowded platforms are from CCTV and how crowded the trains are from the loading information sent from the trains sensors. It’s all pretty abstract when you’re sat in a room staring at a computer screen just up the road from White City.
There are some at Wood Lane who are very, very good, refered to as the A Team and when we hear their voices over the radio we are reassured. There are others, know as the Z Team, who are not so good and when we hear their voices we pray that nothing goes wrong. Today was not one of those days............
