So, I witnessed the other week a passenger standing next to a single leaf door not holding on, as the train rocked from side to side he lost his balance and fell onto the door which made a loud bang.
After this happened every time the train braked the door opened about 3-4 inches and then shut itself during acceleration.
What happened here?
This happened for around 2 stops after which the door stayed shut.
Aren't the doors magnetically locked? If this is the case then I'm guessing he fell on the door with so much force the magnetic lock released and re-locked by chance later on.
Nobody around seemed bothered and neither did he. The only thing he said was "that shouldn't happen" and then he shrugged his shoulders. He even tried preventing the door from opening.
Unfortunately I was too hung over to take note of the car, report it faulty and screw everyone's morning by taking a train out of service.
Isn't there some sort of safety feature to detect this? I'm guessing either yes or no or no because the trains are now old.
Thought please...

Nope, the doors are not held together by magnets - just air pressure IIRC. Not too hard to overcome!
May have just reduced the pressure holding the door shut - did it open/close OK at stations?
And yes, of course there is a safety feature to detect this, the unit would either stop accelerating or brake automatically when there is a door open... don't know the tolerances, they might be more relaxed and allow an inch or two before breaking the circuit.

The door was on the wrong side the whole time. And the gap was easily big enough to fit my head through!

2009 and S stock are electrically locked, but all other stocks, as has been mentioned, rely on air pressure.
the 1992 stock, as others have said in the past, seems to be the easiest to come open a few inches. This is what causes the motors to drop out as the trains pull out of a station, usually when it is packed with people leaning against the doors.

Indeed, nearly fell out of a train once when two buggers I call my friends opened it about 2/3 of the way.

Tut tut, well this isn't the first time I've seen it but I'll try to get it on tape if it happens again.

Doors opening when the train is moving sounds very dangerous!
