Just wondering, why is the Hammersmith & City line suspended until 13:00 today, when the Circle, Met and District lines are all able to run over the same track?

With the Hammersmith line closed, it would be pretty pointless (and confusing) to run trains as "Hammersmith & City" when the open section of the route is covered by the Circle, District, and Met. I wonder if the Circle is actually running as a Circle today?

The answer is dead simple - LU is running an all night service tonight for New Years Eve......where do 'ya reckon all the drivers that are running the service through the night on both the H&C and Circle lines are coming from?!!
There are less people out & about during the day today, and the only unique section on the H&C is between Aldgate East & Liverpool Street - so by chopping the service till 1300 they free up enough drivers to cover the overnight service on both lines.

Revised working is perhaps the simplest way of putting it.
Most lines ran a reduced service throughout new years eve, and will do so throughout new years day. In particular services are severely reduced between around 0300 and 1100 new years day.
Effectively this means that many of those working night shifts on new years eve are actually sourced from those that would have been rosterd earlies on either or both new years eve/new years day. There will of course be those, like myself this year, who are actually rostered to be nights as well.
The problem with the likes of the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines is that they share the same drivers. Reducing their services in the same way as other lines doesn't work so easily, so for them chopping the H&C during the period where you're looking to source drivers from probably looked like the least painful option.

Just to also add the following, much as the question hasn't been fully asked (though I suspect some of it has)... The H&C was shown as "suspended" throughout until 1300, but as has been pointed out by everyone, it shares the same track as the "Circle" Line and also the same drivers. However, as was also pointed out by a few (including yours truly) to management, someone looking very quickly at the travel news could have been forgiven for thinking the line was shut between Hammersmith and Edgware Road. The current trend of treating not just the lines (Circle and Hammersmith & City) but also the stations as being on entirely different worlds is causing confusion. What maybe should have been advertised was "Hammersmith & Circle Lines - reduced service Hammersmith-Edgware Road, No service Liverpool Street-Barking until 1300." This suggestion sits in an inbox somewhere in my company awaiting thoughts from 3rd January...  ;D |
