I bought a joystick set a couple of years back ((http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/chili_peanuts/joysticks.jpg As you can see in the picture there is two stations, the one you see to your left is the throttle control, it acts in the same way as a throttle on a train or plane. You push the deivce forward and you go faster, you pull it back you go slower, the joystick you see on the right is a basic joystick. So if you are pondering about which joystick to get and what is the best value for money I would recommend this (Dave or mods: I did'nt put this in the simulation forums because it's general, and there isn't a forum I can define it into)

I use a Joystick too, mostly for BVE. Mines set so that if I let go of it, I will get an Emergency Brake Application, if I push it forward it will accelerate, pull it back for coasting and back even more and I will get braking (just like the CTBC on D/92/95/96 stocks) It works quite well, but it does slide about a bit on my desk/mousemat, I usually need to Selotape it down or be really careful with moving it about. ;D Here's a Photo: chrisjolly.sphosting.com/Room01.jpg (Ok... I know my rooms in a bit of a mess, but I'm getting a new desk soon and what you see is the best accommodation for the PC at the moment! ;D Also note the LUL stickers stuck around my PC, I was given them by my brother who recieved them on a trip and he knows I have an interest in LUL, so he gave them to me and I have nothing else better to do with them... )

I have that joystick! (Or a different version of). I've never really considered it to be a device for simulations except flight. I might try that out!

I dug out me joystick, litterally blew off the dust and tried to get it to work with BVE 4. But to no avail. I have plugged it in, heard the joyful little tone and with high expectations opened BVE. I selected 'joystick' as the controller, but was unable to change any of the assigned keys. Not to worry I thought, i'm sure the keys are fine as they are. I opened a route (District, to be exact) and (imagaine my horror) when i could not for the life of me get the train moving. I tried putting the little lever in many directions, pushed and pulled the throttle but nothing. Any one have any idea where i'm going wrong?
Phew, i need a cup of tea.

(could you PM me with instructions on how to get BVE 4.2 please) I have the joystick like you and then I have like a handle/gripper which I push forward or back, like that handle on the Tube stock.

I too use that one - great piece of kit, all fully programmable. I must admit I haven't tried it for train sims, but I know it should work fine. I think the only thing that's missing from it is a 'force feedback' type installation which I had on my previous Sidewinder joystick. If it had that, it'd be 100%!
