Apologies if this seems like a deliberate plug, as it isn't. But, I've made this thread as I was going through old photos from 2007 and found this www.flickr.com/photos/fellis-wrv/6517691641/in/photostream and it made me wonder when the last unrefurbished D stock actually ran?. Also are there many other photos showing more unrefurbished D stock? Thank you!

I remember it well, I was on it, as were many of the forum members here. Don't remember it well enough to recall the date however... ;D

This article gives the information: "The last unpainted train thus ran on Friday 15 February 2008 and into the early hours of Saturday 16 February, working train 103 in the morning peak and 106 in the evening peak through to the end of traffic" The last working was Units 7534 +7115 working the 22:54 Upminster – Ealing Broadway

And that last trip from Upminster to Ealing Broadway (then into Ealing Common depot) was driven by District Dave.

Was that a coincidence or was that planned all along? Or did he insist on doing that?

I couldn't make the last journey, but knowing Dave I would be amazed if he insisted. I think most likely would be that he was travelling on the train for his personal enjoyment and was offered the handle by whomever was scheduled to drive it. Dave was a well liked and respected man among his colleagues.

anyway, what do you like more: refurb D78 or unrefurb D78. I can't compare as I haven't used the unrefurbs (unfortunately?)

The three drivers for the last trips were all Instructor Operators and it was specifically planned that way. I remember who Nos. 1 and 3 were, but can't for the life of me remember the second one!
I couldn't go either that night, I was (IIRC) in Zurich!

Just the whole atmosphere and feel of them... don't really like the choice of colours in the refurb, particularly for the panels.

What makes you prefer them from the drivers perspective? Judging by Dave Maloney's original site and showing the features of the refurb cabs, they had new seats etc

Both. Atmosphere of unrefurbs but I love the outcome of the refurbishment.

Was that a coincidence or was that planned all along? Or did he insist on doing that? IIRC it was his rostered duty!! The three drivers for the last trips were all Instructor Operators and it was specifically planned that way. I remember who Nos. 1 and 3 were, but can't for the life of me remember the second one! The first driver was forum member and Upminster I/O "Aspect". The second driver was an Earls Court I/O who is now a test train operator (I can PM you his name if ya really wanna know it); and the third was of course Dave. As for the pre-refurb versus post-refurb question, as a driver I would say post refurb all the way. Offside door close button on the drivers console and the DVA work work for me.
