Rest in peace Hannah, I remember you as always being a happy and cheerful person. Sad news but brings back a lot of memories of happy times working on the District line.

Agreed, she must have been a great inspiration to prospective female drivers. She sounded like a great character who took no nonsense from her male counterparts. She was lucky that she got to drive R and CO/CP stock(?). May she rest in peace.

What a shame that paper added that last sentence. What relevance has drivers current pay got in relation to a story about the first female driver passing away. I actually think its quite disrespectful as it goes

I actually think its quite disrespectful as it goes I sometimes wonder what has happened to the world as so many people now seem to be in the PC brigade and see only the bad in everything. The relevance is quite obvious, try reading the article again and you may spot it, it is certainly not disrespectful.

Had the comparison been made where they mentioned the £16 per week, I would totally agree.......but they added to the end in such a way that it looks to me like a reminder rather than a comparison.
The information and its relevance could have been done so much better.

Not that relevant to the sad news about Hannah, but relating to the article in the standard - in 1969, the average property price in London was £6,141, i.e. 7.4x the salary figure they quoted, whereas in September 2011, the average property price in London was £440,230 or 9.8x the salary quoted.

I so agree at the way that 'snipe' at the end ruined what was otherwise a fair and respectful article. Almost as if she was personally responsible for the outrageous amounts of money these 'greedy' T/Ops get, roll-on driverless Tubes, Bob Crow, etc etc.
In fact widening the pool from where potential Motormen (sic) could come from might be said to have had the opposite affect, though I'm sure it didn't.
I knew Hannah quite well, indeed she was the very first driver I ever ran with 'solo' as a Station Guard in 1978 - 425 Duty, 12:45 book-on at Barking.
OT - I'm so sick of the envy and greed that permeates this society that I no longer admit to strangers that I work for LU, only to then receive a diatribe against Mr Crow, the RMT, and T/OPs pay. I didn't vote for BC, I'm not in the RMT, and I'm no longer a driver!!!

I can see your point of view here but I don't believe that quoting the current pay for a driver was a 'snipe', it was simply showing how much a woman might be able to earn today compared to 40 years ago and perhaps suggesting that Hannah was chiefly responsible for that. Perhaps the journalist needs a lesson in comprehension but I don't believe there was bad intent, of course as the article was from Evening Standard it has been tarred with the same brush as all the others, exactly what you are personally complaining about with regard to strangers. There is always more than one angle to a story and as mercenary as the media can be I do think that in this case the ES has a little more respect than it is being given credit for. I certainly do agree with your opinion regarding envy and greed in today's society which starts at the very top of society and runs to the very bottom in rip-off Britain.

Susan
As first/introductory posts go... yours is particularly special, combining a tribute to your aunt and poetry... if only it was in happier circumstances.
On behalf of the entire District Dave forum membership thank you for taking the time (so early in the day) and effort to join and post...
We hope that you and your family have a special Christmas knowing that trailblazers like Hannah are remembered by those they worked with... and also by people they've never met, but who recognise their achievement!
Kind regards
ChrisW
