I think 30 mph between Surrey Quays and Whitechapel and 40 mph on the surface sections.

Sounds about right. There wasn't must scope for fast running as the gaps between stations were short and there was a speed restriction through the Thames Tunnel.

I'm guessing a brief stretch of 40 mph but that's pure speculation. I was watching an old DEV and couldn't make out many speed limit signs but on the new ELL 40 is permitted for a lot of the route except the Thames tunnel which is mainly 30.

Thanks notatraindriver, But one final question, why is there a speed limit in the Thames Tunnel? Is it due to structual reasons because of its old age or...?

The Thames tunnel was 25mph iirc.
The rest of the line was mainly 40mph, including northbound to Shoreditch.

I don't know how strict speed limits are kept to on the tube. They don't have 'black box' data recorders that can be downloaded (sometimes remotely) that all national rail trains have.

The S Stock regularly achieves 55 mph - I'm assuming the official speed limit is still 50 mph.

I presume everything but 09ts and S stock Apologies for going off topic again but AFAIK the 73s have a black box as well. 92, 95 & 96 stock also have incident/TMS data recorders. On the 95 stock at least, the TMS recorder in particular records a lot of information - right down to any fault messages displayed to the Train Operator and what destination code the Train Operator set up & when!

But can the A stock achieve over 50mph even though it has been limited, because sometimes it feel like it is going faster than 50mph.

But can the A stock achieve over 50mph even though it has been limited, because sometimes it feel like it is going faster than 50mph. It hasnt been physically limited to that speed. Last year my sat nav (i have 2) showed 62 mph around Dollis Hill. Was exhilarating.

So the A stocks are disappearing fast but I'd pay a lot of money to be on a tour that could go on the East london line one last time. Is it possible to attach a battery loco onto the end of an A stock, nock down the wall separating St Mary's curve and the line and let it operate only on that line for a whole day, maybe a week. Yeah It would cost a lot of money but is it possible???

When I was a boy I can remember the diesel freight trains thundering through Wapping between the Eastern Region and Southern but I excpect they were not doing more than 30mph. With it now London Overground I would think freight could run even if only as an emergency route.

With it now London Overground I would think freight could run even if only as an emergency route. On Wapping station is a photo reproduced in enamel on the platform wall...in the picture is a goods train heading through the Thames Tunnel, and a sign on the tunnel mouth says words to the effect of "Goods trains 15mph" I have often considered the potential usefulness of the ELL as a freight route (at night, perhaps) but have been told that the new-build section has a gradient too steep for modern freight. It has occurred to me that a short link from Whitechapel to the EB Great Eastern in the vicinity of Bethnal Grn station might be useful as a freight link? We can but dream.

I'm sure most people have seen it, but it's a rather leisurely view of the Thames Tunnel.
