As I intend to order a model of L8/9 soon, can anyone tell me what the loads looked like? Which way were the wheels loaded and were other items carried too?
Also, as part of my quest to model the 'Fluffer' train, I have converted two Hornby 3-plank wagons into match wagons. Can any one tell me what was used to weight them down? I understand that they contained various pieces of scrap but what did this consist of? Thanks in advance.

I have seen photographs of L8/9 carrying wheelsets. They were carried with the axles traversely and IIRC it was stated that old sleepers were used as 'chocks'. Whether they were chained or roped down if at all I don't know.

I would imagine that they would not need to be chained as the weight of them against the sleepers would stop them 'rolling'. Thanks for that.

A little bit more information, the wheel sets were 'staggered', one rim was 'inside' it's neighbour.

Thanks again. Does anyone have a photo or is that too much to ask. Every picture I have seen shows them from ground level.

I've been looking for the photograph and I just came across two photos of one carrying a single axle and wheels, lengthwise and right behind the 'short' cab. It appears that they must have been loaded either way. A single axle may have been placed behind the short cab to help with weight distribution.
