Not sure if this is the right place, but between King's Cross and Farringdon, there are several signs next to the Inner Circle track that warn of syringes in the area.
What's that about!?

I suspect these are to warn people on or about the line that there are discarded syringes often found in the area, and as such to take care.

But why in that area? I've never seen these signs elsewhere.

I'd guess it's becuase it's an easily accessible part of the network in which there is a quite an extensive drug problem

Probably because there's places around there which are convenient for people to administer their concoctions.
Whilst some drug users are responsible when disposing of their paraphernalia, there are some users who have no consideration for others and who will happily just throw their used needles over the wall onto the railway, in a similar manner to those who dispose of them in post-boxes and the like.

Also, LU track is inspected by track walking patrolmen every couple of days so it would warn them too.

If the line were rubber-tyred, it would be more scarier...

If the line were rubber-tyred, it would be more scarier... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think rubber tyred trains have pneumatic tyres, just solid rubber, hence a syringe wouldn't really hurt them!

If they were pneumatic it would be really scary. Syringes don't cause massive derailments, I suppose... Is this the downside of having extensive parts of a railway in an easily accessible cutting?

i have seen these on the floor before in a carriage on the floor, its better a sign warning as its a reminder instead of the risk of being pricked by one of those things.

When I was working "on-or-near-the-line", one area in Bristol had a syringe problem so the guys clearing undergrowth had to wear syringe-and-needle-proof gloves. Yes, they DO make them - and 7 years ago they cost just the £147 per pair. The gang needed two pairs..........

A syringe is very unlikely to puncture a tyre. It simply would not be strong enough or heavy enough to do so.

A syringe is very unlikely to puncture a tyre. It simply would not be strong enough or heavy enough to do so. Agreed. Also, a syringe is most likely to fall flat (especially on the flat surfaces used by rubber-tyred stock), and so would merely be crushed by the tyres. And even if a puncture occurs it isn't a problem; there are sufficient other tyres to take the load, and a normal steel wheel behind the tyre that can drop onto the regular rail. Punctures and flat tyres occur very occasionally on the Paris Metro, and yet there aren't derailments or accidents. It's ridiculous to think that they would - no one would deploy a system like they do if it couldn't handle a component failure.

Anything needle-like found on a bus forces a VOR, then those qualified to do so will put on the gloves take the sharps box, then go through front to back checking everywhere.

We also carry "spit kits" - Does beg the question though, are you going to sit and dig through your bag to find it, or just wipe it off... Never been in that position myself, nor know anyone that has, but it's one thing I consider as the most disgusting thing you can be on the other end of, and anyone that knows me from my days of football......
