Hello The Northwood siding is currently being used for the A Stocks to be taken away to be scrapped. However what was it used for before this and what will it be used for after all the A Stock have gone

Just as a refuge siding - originally part of the goods yard (closed 14/11/66) which also had an exit at the 'south' end.
Turnout points were installed 6/3/93 on existing siding road for new engineers siding to be built adjacent, which was commissioned on 15/3/93.
A de-icing re-fuelling facility was added at sometime, but the date eludes me at the moment.
According to a diagram I have seen about track changes on the SSR, Northwood sidings are to go (no date) as will the crossover south of the station. A new crossover is proposed north of the station.

Returning the S stock to Bombardier? What are the conditions for return? Is LU still in the return window? +2.

The siding at Northwood which is not electrified is relatively recent.
The reversing electrified siding is not recent and replaced the crossover at Northwood that was no doubt removed in about 1961-62.
The S stock will not be returned to BB and will be modified at Neasden. In the meantime, A stock fans can enjoy the trains a little longer.

The non-electrified siding was provided in 1993 - see my post above.

Thanks. Just seen your post.
I think the cross over will be provided at Moor Park. That's a shame. It won't be the same without the odd Northwood reverser!

there's reference to the scrapped train here on this youtube clip as they are going by. apparently a deicing tank was 3/4 full and had to be emptied.

That was on 5004 which was one of two single ended de-icing cars. 5000 is the other.

it is interesting on the way back they are discussing why the trains were not removed by road because of the width.the tank sounds to have been removed.the videos down from watford are worth watching also.

Well, presumably one day the S Stock will need disposing of when their replacement arrives...

It won't be via Northwood sidings though, they will be gone in the next 10 years if things go to plan.

Not actually used by passengers, but used from time to time by (empty) passenger trains to reverse. For example, yesterday!!
A cable fault at Harrow North Junction resulted in an initial suspension from 13.45 to 14.25. The fauilt couldn't be rectified until after traffic, so to reduce the traffic jam of trains in the failure area, Amershams ran all stations and the Watfords were a shuttle to and from Northwood, reversing south to north via the siding, detraining in the SB platform. Not sure whether it went on all day or not, but certainly in the afternoon for a time

That's something different. I wonder when a mainline shunt* was last carried out at Northwood?
*reversal South to North via the Up (Southbound) line [there is a shunt signal for it!]

Can't give you a date, but it occured during one of the engineering weekends around 1-2 years ago (when nothing was running south of Northwood). Sorry I cannot be more accurate than that.
During previous engineering works, the shunt you mention was unable to be used, due to the fact that the possession marker boards prevented a train heading far enough south to berth fully behind the shunt signal. On one of the last possessions, someone saw sense and positioned the markers a little further south, which gave us the shunt to use. Ordinarily during these shutdowns it would not have been needed - with everything booked to use the siding. However a series of events lead to the shunt becoming a very handy "get out."
