Are there any 72TS trains with no middle cab?
On my regular Bakerloo commute (all of three stops), I generally get on the train at the tail end of the third car, immediately ahead of the inner cab. One morning a week or so ago there was no cab there, and it didn't look like the train was simply the wrong way around. (I didn't manage to get a good look along the length of the train, to play hunt-the-cab.) Did I get a train that had cabs only at either end?

Yes - unit 3299 - 4299 - 4399 - 3399
3399 is an UNDM in the middle facing an UNDM from a 3-car unit.
This unit was made up from cars involved in collisions at Harrow and Piccadilly.

Could happen. Certainly if there is another collision and cars are damaged. The most precious cars in the 1972 fleet are the UNDM because there are no spare cars left. I'd like to see an extra 72 stock train formed with 3399 placed the correct way round!

Unlikely to happen in the current financial climate, but you can never say never ....

If an extra train was ever needed on the Bakerloo, I think it would be more likely that a 3-car with two DMs would be formed as that way unit 3299 wouldn't need to be taken out of service for car 3399 to be swapped with a DM. I have read that the trains run with the 'D' end at the north end to avoid having to shunt units using the controls in the other UNDMs, but if it was thought that it would be better to replace 3399 with a DM they could have used one from a 67TS unit, or even a 72 Mk1 DM from the Northern, so I don't think it really matters whether there are DMs or UNDMs at the inner ends of units.

Is there anything essential in an UNDM that isn't in a DM? (I seem to recall that the oily bits of an UNDM are equivalent to a DM+T. ) Do the UNDMs have compressors?

So it would, but with only one compressor in the 3 car unit (see, I was wrong, the UNDM doesn't have one) there would be no point in having one with two cabs - it couldn't run on its own anyway. So the extra cab is just wasted space, which in an UNDM could be used by passengers. The extra door each side is useful too

Is there a middle cab on any Central line services? I'm sure I saw one the other day.

Yes there are a few trains running with middle cabs which have had bits removed over time. There is a recent thread on the Central Line section.
I certainly wouldn't want to have two middle cabs end on as there is a large gap without any doors.

This could lead nicely into a discussion about door layouts past and present, and pros/cons...
