Good Afternoon,
I am wondering if you knowledgeable ladies & gentlemen can assist me. I am doing so research about making a OO Gauge model/impression of Watford Met Station.
The sort of time frame I am thinking of is to put it broadly the 1960's as I want to have the option of building kits of various types of multiple units, from F Stock to A Stock with the invariable CO/CP or Dreadnoughts as well - fairly fluid and flexible.
Could anyone point me in the direction of a track plan from the 1950's or 1960's for the layout - I would be very grateful.
Another question I have is the lines outside of the platform roads are used for stabling trains off peak if I am right - these lines were they originally run around loops for for example the Croxley Tip workings I know ran around at Watford and took on water. There is a lovely photo in 'Red Panniers' of a Pannier propelling a burning wagon to the water crane to dowse the flames. However how would a train enter these stabling lines normally, would they come out of service at Croxley or pull into Watford - detrain then pull out of the station, change ends and into the stabling line?
Ironically Watford is one of the few stations on the Network I have never visited. I've watched parts of the Underground Review, Metropolitan Steam Returns, the Met DEV and read numerous books but I can't seem to get all the information.
Thank you in advance. ~ Gary

I would consider modelling the late 50s too. Watford did see occasional F stock, P stock (not converted to CO/CP yet) and of course T stock. Dreadnoughts would hardly ever visited Watford but you could get them in. Then you can have a nice brand new A60 stock train on the layout too.
If you want to adapt it for earlier you could do a late 30s look and use Bogie stock, T stock and Met 1905 saloon stock. There was even the odd LNER steam service to Marylebone in the early days!

And I've got the original relief signalman's notebook that John Hinson based his plans on.

Thank you for your assistance; I have manged to lay out the track as indicated on the plans - minus the Scissors Cross-over which I am waiting to order the componants for. The size of my board means that my scenic section finishes between the scissors crossover and the access for the loop line, so there are three tracks heading off scene.
When did the yard close at Watford? In the Red Panniers book there is a shot of empty ground in the background at Watford which presumably was the yard itself. I am just wondering if I can perhaps include a track or two as an additional piece of operational interest.
Cheers, ~ Gary

In the West of Watford book F.W. Goudie & Douglas Stuckey there is are pictures of a green Class 24 D5059 shunting at Watford goods yard and also passing through Croxley Station (Met). in Npvember 1966; the yard closed on 14 November 1966. There is also a picture of an LT Pannier (L99) leaving Watford yard for Croxley Tip@ the same time.

Thank you all for your input - with on here and searching and squinting on Old Maps I have a complete trackplan from 1960/61 which includes the goods yard - downside is I have to somehow finance more track... On the plus side I have the scissors crossover completed and laid down, currently in the middle of testing. Another question I might ask, I'll put it here as it was seen at Watford Met is during the Steam on the Met events, there was a Mark I Brake coach linky Can anyone point me in the direction of some closer photos - I could take some stills from the Metropolitan Steam returns DVD I have but if there are any high quality photos I'd be interested in seeing them. I am switching my focus you see, as I can't finance another LT Model or Track - but I do have an odd Mark I Brake coach I could respray into the livery. Was it a support coach, or did it carry passengers for the event? I can't tell if it is a BSK or a BFK. I just fancy something a little different to occupy myself for the time being. Either that or I add the transfers to my Acton Shuttle Unit. Thank you in advance. ~ Gary

Thank you Nigel, it didn't even occur to me to check the VCT website for Mark I's clearly I don't class them as vintage. And I've been on there for hours at a time before.
Any other photos anyone has would be most appreciated. The current work on Watford is being hampered by the need to adapt the track plan to suit my needs. Also I want to try and fit some scenery on what is rather a narrow board.
Cheers, ~ Gary

A quick question re Watford. When I worked there it was rumoured that running tunnels had already been constructed under Cassiobury Park. Has anybody heard this at all.

Tubeprune Sorry perhaps I should have said not the whole length of tunnel but a a short distance under the park. This was related to me by an existing Station Foreman who had been at Watford for a number of years. You may be right he might have been pulling my leg. I was just curious. It was just after working at the LTM for a number of years and learning of many strange tunnels etc on the network it occurred to me that this may be another one of those curiosities.

The Met did purchase a property in Watford High Street ( it is now a Wetherspoons) however no further work was undertaken.

Indeed, wasn't the property #44 in the High Street? I must say it is probbably only one of the few Spoons in the capital I have not frequented in my time there. Even when I was part of a refit team working on our shop at Watford. Back to the subject. I am considering omitting the goods yard for the model I am making - I have estimated to get everything fitting more or less at half scale I would need a space of approximately 20' x 6' without a fiddle yard. And that's out of the question so I am thinking of rationalising the plan somewhat. Currently I have the platform at Half-scale length which is fine for 4-car trains which I intend to operate. However I might add a stabling siding or two instead of the yard off of the loop line adjacent to the running lines. Perhaps I could call it " Cassiobury Park (For Watford)" The idea I am thinking of is mixing the plans of Watford MET and Stanmore MET together that way I can fit some scenery in as well otherwise its all a little bit pointless - unless I did High Street Kensington then just have sheer retaining walls on either side of the base boards. ;D Cheers, ~ Gary

How about Watford (Whippendell Road)? Check it out on Google Maps. This is how my Croxley layout got the Wiggenhall Road suffix
