Hi all,
I have recently been working on a project with DCC and my tube trains. I only just fitted the car out with lighting and thought I could have a crack at sounds aswell, so here is the resut
Its an early representation of what to expect and I have yet to record more sounds aas a few of them are only temporary ones. I am however happy with the compressor and shutdown sequence, just everything else needs a little work. Which is not to much of a problem to be honest.
I intend to do a 1992TS aswell as a 1995 (If I get the time!)
Regards

Great piece of work - What power bogie are you using?

Its Tenshodo, but I am currently having a problem with acceleration.
I pull away in notch 1 and it goes from what is a scale speed of 0mph to about 10mph, then in notch 2 it slows down a bit and picks up when I go more notches. Then when I want to stop I go from any speed step notch to 0, and it comes to a nice stop then right on the last centimetre or so it picks up speed it jumps about 5cm at what would be about 10mph then grinds to a halt.
I am somewhat confused...

I am somewhat confused... I am afraid that this might be your answer the small Tenshodo's do not work well with DCC. If you use 2 in a 4 car unit they become totally erratic and one may refuse to start whilst the other is a full speed or they will decided to go in opposite directions! I have replaced all 4 of mine with Black Beetle spuds which are a lot more controllable. I think the problem is with the small gear ratio and relatively high speed due to the small diameter of the wheels. I spent many hours scratching my head over this problem before replacing the Tenshodos @£150 down the drain! If you are using a Guagemaster Prodigy for DCC control the problems are even worse . Sorry to be the barer of bad news especially when you are making progress with the sound chip. If you want any further help or advise with this issue please feel free to PM me Nigel

What wheel size are you using Nigel? I have heard they sit a little higher than the Tenshendo?
I am totally new to this black beetle malarky, where did you purchase yours from? Is it easy to modify them to add shoebeams on the side?

The wheel size I used was 9.6mm the best place to get them from is DC Kits - Charlie Petty mention me if you ring him www.dckits-devideos.co.uk/shop/dc_kits/motorbogies_12volt_dc_motors/black_beetle_bogies/MetroModels - John Polley makes motor bogie collar for a Tenshodo Motor bogie which can be modified for to fit a Black Beetle www.metromodels.net/mm_motor_bogie_collar_bogie.JPGand then you can glue the EFE sideframes to. You will also have to enlarge the hole in the bottom of the EFE motor coach(s) to accommodate the Black Beetle as it is bigger than the Tenshodo, this is a pain as no doubt you have already found out! The locating bracket for the Tenshodo can be used for the Black Beetle however it will need to be a little higher so some shims and longer screws will also be required. I hope this helps. Nigel

you beat me to it! Can you provide details of sound equipment fitted and how you created the files? Due to space considerations, I was planning to have sound from speakers below baseboard but following train along. BTW, there was an EM gauge society article about fitting Black Beetles which would work regardless of gauge, I think. I can dig it out, if of interest PM me.

Firstly I bought a LokSound V4 Micro from this site www.oliviastrains.com. He then asked me what Loco sounds I wanted with it (For £100 you get the decoder, standard speaker and their own recordings of a loco - which they have quite alot!) The guy suggested a class 411 as it is quite near tube style EMU (ish!) I then bought a Lokprogrammer from DCC Supplies. I then fitted the chip and the speaker (to which there is plenty of room in the middle seat bays in a DM car to fit a 'standard' speaker) I then tested it and hooked up directional lighting and In car lighting with LED strips These are fed from the AUX3 and AUX4 of the chip. (I am cirrently doing a mod which makes the headlights have blubs not LEDs too) Then I started getting used to LokProgrammer. The sofware is complicated as hell when you first get it. But once you download one of their trains from their website (only german trains) you can look at the files and projects and see how motor sounds and other sound stuff is done. I then took recordings (Having worked/ working at Neasden depot (A Stock) I was able to shut the compressors off a train and record the MA sound, shut the MA off and record the compressor sounds, brake release sounds, whistle, etc) If I had of recorded it on the mainline, it would have background noises like people talking or the clickety clack of rails) Having recorded this on my iPhone I then downloaded them to my computer. Taking AOA Audio Extractor (free) software I then removed the Audio from the video recordings. The Audio is then ready to be fine tuned up. The DCC sound chip only recognises sounds that are in (WAV) format, 8bit, 15625Hz in MONO. The iPhone recorded in 44,100Hz Stereo and 32-bit I think. So the sound quality had to be dramatically reduced. I edited the sounds and clipped/ cropped/ repeated changed the sounds in Audacity (free sound editing software) Because of the way LokProgrammer works, you can only edit sound projects that you have the original files for. So I couldn't actually edit ANY sounds from the project that was put on from oliviastrains (Class 411) So I had to start a new project and update it and save it as a new project. The DCC chip had to be wiped or left alone. I then got one sound right (The MA ticking over) and got the gain and amplitude right and this was a basis for the volume of future sounds. So I built up sounds as I went along. The DCC chip can be reprogrammed as many times as you like and you can have quite a few sounds on the chip. Because people may not be as fortunate as me when it comes to getting pure undistributed recordings, I may upload this sound project to the web. At some point I also want to do my 1992TS the same. But the Metromodels 1992TS has LOTS more space underneath for decoders/ speakers, etc. I am also planning to put an interior inside it too. As of today I have done all 4 cars bogie mods by John Polley (which is a little time consuming but I cracked them out in 2 hours) Smooth as a baby's bum now. I have three more sounds which need better recordings and I have to do the motor sounds. But I have to fit a black beetle before I do the motor sounds as i cannot program and line up the sounds on the cruddy tenshendo on DCC! I will post another video when It is complete and it can run around my club track or something. Regards

Well, here's the (near to) final version. I am not happy with the seat moquette as I want it to be a 62 not the silly blue that it is now. And I think the compressor finish sound needs to be improved upon, but these are just minor tinkles.
I have just ordered an A Stock DM so I shall be doing that next. If anybody is interested I shall post another video of that too!
