Every time I walk down Wakering Road in Barking (which is very often) I've been seeing works being carried out in an abandoned building alongside Barking Station, I had a though that it could be LU related as I've seen LU vans parked outside sometimes but then ruled it out as it's not actually attached to the station. However I walked past it yesterday and noticed that the scaffolding had gone and the work had been finished and a sign above the door answered my question. It is now the London Underground SSL Signals & Track Rivers Depot, Wakering Road, Barking. I was wondering if someone could explain what exactly the purpose of this is without stating the obvious ;D. Thanks, here are some pics (Click for larger images):

as it says on the tin a super (there words) track and signals depot for the east end of the district. it uses the old NR Relay Room and the old signal cabin which was last used in BR days. It is named after a person who is retiring next month after many years of service.
