hi everyone
Just a thought. has the a stock ever run in service to Upminster or Ealing Broadway. I am sure it has never been a regular service but has it ever happened? I say this as I noted on here the other day that the C Stock has been to Amersham in service.
Also to add to this, does anybody think through S stock services are likely to take place now from the Met onto the District. Maybe in the future?
Thanks ;D

I have never heard of A Stock running to Upminster in passenger sor Ealing Broadway! I would imagine that gauging issues would prevent same? I included a photo of an A Stock in Barking Sidings in an issue of UndergrounD magazine...it was there for training crews for the ELL. I also published photos of a 1973 Stock train at Ealing Broadway on a football special that ran direct to Arsenal I think. Also 1959 Stock at Amersham on brake testing.
I published a photo of C Stock that ran ECS (empty) to Richmond in the late 1970s for gauging purposes. Also a photo of C Stock at Olympia in order to meet diverted LMR trains.
D78 Stock as it was ran to Amersham and Chesham on the 'Metroliner' railtour and 1967 Stock to Ealing Broadway on the 'Auto-Tube Rambler' tour.

Underground News has published pictures of A stock at Ealing Broadway before, and as tubeprune has related on here, it was gauged on the south side of the circle in the 60s with undesirable results!
So... that probably means its run Ealing-Upminster in seperate runs at one time or another. Don't think its done Richmond, Oly, the western Circle or Wimbledon though? I suppose why would it need to...

I am sure I have posted before that unit 5218 (ith the air metacone suspension) went to Upminster (with me as well!) in the mid-1970s and have a photo of the unit in Upminster depot, with the background showing "Upminster depot"

Wasn't the eastern section of the H&C originally metropolitan line, as the Metropolitan line signage is still in situ at Barking. This means that A stock could concievably have ended up at Upminster.

A stock was never intended for passenger service on the H&C section, even when it came under the Met banner.

Does 5218 still have that suspension?

Does 5218 still have that suspension? No, DM 5218 was replaced with 5208 in 1992, and was scrapped in 1994.

It is highly unlikely due, as said, to gauging problems on the south of the Circle. Also, from High Street to Edgware road the platforms are too short. I've seen A stock at Ealing Bdy several times whn it used to be overhauled at Acton works.

Surely, it could have come from Uxbridge, down the Piccadilly line to Acton Town and into Acton Works that way?

I may be off my trolley as usual but was the route taken RUISLIP SIDING > RUISLIP DEPOT > NORTH ACTON > EALING BROADWAY > ACTON TOWN? I say that because I am sure that we have discussed past clearance as far as NA.

Im sure there is a cable arch that is tube guage between South Ruislip and Northolt, but that might not have been there when 5000 was going about testing on that part!

No it wasn't as A62 stock was tested on the Central long before the Ruislip connection was built!

So delivery from Cravens in Sheffield via Ruislip Depot was presumably via North Acton (reverse), Ealing Bdy (reverse), Acton Town (reverse), Rayners Lane (reverse) to Neasden Depot?

I'm going back to 1970-73 with my memories of A stock at Ealing Broadway. Possibly test runs after overhaul at Acton?
Routing to Acton would have been via Rayners Lane and the Picc, no connection from Ruislip at the time.

No, they were delivered via the Great Central line, which still existed in the early 1960s.

24.07.73 - First use of Ruislip Siding for stock move(s) – points hand-worked.
28.09.75 - New IMR commissioned at Ruislip Siding. New siding between Metropolitan/Piccadilly lines and Ruislip depot commissioned and electrified. Control of signalling from Rayners Lane cabin.

I clearly remember seeing a photo of delivery or scrap stock for Rotherham coming down the STUB of the Great Central. It had come down the Midland to Bletchley, then Bletchley to Calvert, then down the G.C. stub to Aylesbury.
I am told this is how the Midland Region sent their DMUs from Marylebone to Bletchley for servicing.

I also remember seeing District stock for scrapping reversing at North Acton then heading off to Ruislip in late April '72 or very early May '72. There is no doubt that it had got on the Central at Ealing Broadway.

Yes, it would have been easy for the GCR to be used to deliver glittering A stock to its new home at Neasden, and I believe this was the case. A stock was tested on the Central Line and must have travelled via Ealing Broadway to get to Acton Works when overhauls begain in about 1965?

A Stock overhauls at Acton indeed began in 1965 - unit 5006 (sadly no longer with us) was the first in 1/65, although it may have gone there in late-1964.
The route was Neasden - Rayners Lane - Acton Town - Acton Works and vice versa.

ISTR posting elsewhere about scrap DR Q stock I worked from Upminstor to Ealing common via EBdy. come to think of it, it was scrap R59 stock hauled by Q38 pilot motors. Part of the 7-car programme.

Leave that one with me, I'll have a search around in the morning as I recall something like that when we were doing the archives threads. (It might even be there) I've been busy playing around looking for info in the 35 converted to 38ts stuff today - That seems to be a bit like banging your head against a brick wall, in that I wonder why I ever started! (But that's a different subject)

A while back I saw a Facebook page dedicated to 1973 stock travelling on the Hammersmith & City--especially the section between Hammersmith and Edgware Rd. It may also have included some pictures of 73s working on the Aldgate East-Barking section.
