A friend is looking for some details of the changeover period of the BTH and Westinghouse Met electrics to the 1921/22 MetVic replacements essentially asking if anybody had any details on how the change was effected and over how long- ie were the original locos withdrawn en-masse when the MetVic locos were ready or was it a case of a phased replacement over a year or so (c1922)? Was it possible for a brief period to see Westinghouse, BTH and MetVic locos working alongside each other? Her more usual research at TNA, Kew and LTM Acton consists of signalling and working timetables so I am unsure if anything about this subject would exist in either of these archives and were it would be located if it was. Minutes of the Traffic Committee are a possible source maybe. She has the usual books- Benest's Metropolitan Electric Locos (both editions), Steam to Silver etc.

The new locos would have been in service at the same time as the older ones, for a while anyway. I guess the best time would be in 1922 when new locos were being delivered. The delivery pattern seems to have been 1921-23 according to Ken Benest's book. The locos were virtually new anyway. There is a photo showing most of the new bodies in Vickers workshop at one time.

My understanding of it was that loco 17 (a BTH) was adapted into the new pattern as a trial and then modifed at a later date when the rest were done. I don't think hardly any of the equipment went to the new locos. The motors, bogies and compressors were placed upon 20 new saloon stock cars (half BW/ half BTH) in about 1922-23. There is evidence to show that one camel back loco was sent to Drayton Park as a shunter and the photo clearly shows 1904 GNC bogies on it!

I have a copy of the Met 60 years book somewhere, and ISTR there's a pic in there of a load of "new" locos in a factory. I'll dig it out when I return to GB. currently working on RML2340 and RT2250 in Germany. good fun.

Well off-topic but was RML2340 the one which kept its Gold Block "London Transport" livery for years after the others were repainted with roundels....an old friend from Route 37...good if she's still on the road, and well done for keeping it that way,Roy.

Two locomotives were rebuilt, one from each batch, # 17 as mentioned and # 6 from the Westinghouse (Camel-Back) batch. Although the rebuilds were successful it was decided to build the remaining locos from new (probably because of costs). There were probably detail differences between the rebuilds and the other 18. One locomotive (# 15) was exhibited with the body panels removed from one side at the 1925 Wembley Empire exhibition, for many years afterwards there were slight differences in the side panels were they had been replaced. # 17 was withdrawn early due to accident damage.
