People jams at Baker street the line was closed from Baker st to Wembly park .went for a ride on the 379 from Liv st got back at 1900 still nothing from Liv St
So came home and had beans on toast to console myself

Signal failure at Finchley Road.
Has messed up the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines too.

Apparently cable theft from what Chiltern Railways have been tweeting. Lots of problems on the Met today. Cable damage (not theft) within Neasden Depot caused problems with trains entering and leaving Neasden depot. This was not a problem until a sudden cloud burst which caused flooding between Swiss Cottage and Finchley Road and subsequent multiple signal failures. Unfortunately there were so many Met Trains south of Finchley Road when this failure occurred that knock on delays quickly affected Circle & H&c services. Just to finish us off later in the evening there was also a signal failure between Stepney Green and Whitechapel.

Took me almost three hours to get home to Chesham from work in Wembley this evening.

A lot of my friends came moaning to me this evening about it, I guessed correctly as to the reasons for the delay Ouch! Were you stranded on trains or at station/s? I had a bit of a nightmare last Saturday due to signal failures. Took me an age to get into London from Amersham - although having a full journey on an s Stock softened the blow. Being transferred onto the slow lines at Moor Park took away a bit of the shine though!!! Out of interest, when is the signalling upgrade due to start/be completed on the MET? It definately looks like it needs it!

TfL were quoting late:
"Suspended between Aldgate and Baker Street due to a signal failure at Finchley Road. Severe delays on the rest of the line."
which is a bit odd to read! I understand from previous post about them backing up etc but it's updates like that which lead to lack of confidence in the displays!

but it's updates like that which lead to lack of confidence in the displays! Hang on.... You've been given an accurate report and it's still not good enough? Unless I've misunderstood and City trains were still running. I'd have thought if there were not enough trains below Finchley Road then the easiest thing for Metroland is to turn back at Baker Street and let the Hot and Cold take the City passengers. If you understand backing up, you'll understand why. Blimey.

And yet we successfully moved our share 60,000+ football fans from Wembley without incident (well apart from some overcrowding here and there).
Let's not lose sight of the situation in the above picture - it wasn't one railway or another that meant all those people were there. There were the Met problems - causing people to choose Chiltern as a way out - and then there were the aforementioned Chiltern problems. Thousands of people with nowhere to go.
Not a good evening by all accounts. The Met and H&C certainly got it with both barrels. The Met lost its "bolt-hole" of Neasden depot - which would normally mean a reasonable service could be kept north of Wembley. And the H&C got hit right at the end of recovering from the Met problem.

The Met lost its "bolt-hole" of Neasden depot - which would normally mean a reasonable service could be kept north of Wembley. And the H&C got hit right at the end of recovering from the Met problem. The problems at Neasden Depot were a contributing factor, but the chaos was to be expected with the rain! As soon as I saw the heavy rain I moved the signalling diagram to Swiss Cottage expecting the usual, and not to disappoint, within 2 minutes we had a track bobbing in advance of MD35. We then had an auto with a dual aspect also on the Northbound between Lords and Marlborough Road, and within 5 minutes had the same on the Southbound in the same area. At this point, there must have been 15-20 Mets South of Finchley Road. The Aldgates had to go to the City as we couldn't get the Baker Street reversers out of the platforms due to the Northbound queue of trains. We then ended up with 2 each in Moorgate and Aldgate, and WB trains tipping out as far back as KX, to ease the burden on Baker Street. A few other issues then occurred in between all of these goings on, leading to the disaster we called a train service. I think it's time for some investment in thedrainage in the area concerned, as this is going to happen every time there is heavy rain. With MetControl being such a good relief, I did feel a bit guilty leaving him such a shambles, but I know he loves putting it all back together again

This rain wasn't just heavy, it was almost tropical. What with the ensuing multiple signal failures and the co-incidental problems at Neasden it seems to me, as a mere punter, that it is amazing the system didn't shut down entirely. It's also a testament to the London railway network that the Wembley crowds still got to the match - how many cities provide six separate rail services to a stadium?
However this should be a warning the the LU decision makers; the high frequency of signal failures during normal weather conditions make it apparent that the system is in dire need of update and there seems to be little evidence that they are getting to grips with it.

The area affected last night is down as being a full "rip out and replace" at some point, under a multi-week blockade. However, what with the Olympics at the "ideal" time next year, not much is likely to be done over the next 18 months or so. Last night's troubles were not helped by the fact that a drain in the area was recently found to have collapsed. It is hoped remedial repairs can be made before the end of this week. Money, and time to fix these things without hoards of people being inconvenienced (and who then post on here amongst other places ;D ) are 2 of the main reasons this area has not been tackled head-on.
